I think that the phrase "buy the coin not the holder" applies more to slabbed coins... I for one would rather have the complete packaging intact and in the best shape possible.

This is for when i am specifically purchasing a set as a "Set" and not for breaking out or completing an album...

for example i have several 1996 mint sets ( for the Roosevelt dime ) I purchased 2 specifically to break the dime out of the packaging and send it in for grading, in that case i could have cared less about the condition of the packaging...

I 5 other sets that i specifically have as a "set" and i made sure to purchase ones that where in great/mint condition as a whole, packaging as well as coins...

It really matters what specifically you are collecting ( mint sets or the individual coins )

True...when I buy mint sets I buy to keep...intact with all the papers and such...I have thought about buying the 81 and the 70 to get the half and the dollars out for my sets but haven't yet.

I think it goes back to...collect what you like...not what someone tells you to!

I can see how this might be mis understood without all the info, These coins are put in airtite holders, and the waitresses and tellers know they are collectable coins!!

Whats the value of a proof 1957 Jefferson ? 1.50 in PF-65,, I have gotten from the bank in return for small gifts like this , 8 Franklin halves,10 40% Kennedies, and several 90% kennedies, 15 to 20 Pre 64 washington quarters, and more wheat cents than several rolls, I think it is equitable !!

For the small gifts at the local truck stop, just today, I was given a 1978 series 2 dollar star note, I have the pleasure of sitting for a couple of hours looking thru all the tips, and coins rolls in the place, every saturday morning,I think a few indian head pennies and a few proof coins have more than paid for themselves !!

Do I care what they do with the gifts I give them, Not really !! But I think to last one they said they are putting them away for their kids.
