PCGS Becomes Official Grading Service of the U.S. Mint

When PCGS became the first grading service to grade and holder a new 2009 $20 Ultra High Relief Gold Coin, officials at the United States Mint were duly impressed. PCGS President Don Willis recently negotiated an exclusive 5-year agreement with Mint officials, and as a result, PCGS will grade and encapsulate all coins produced by the Mint over the next five years.

    WORDS FAIL ME.

If any of you can shed light ill be much obliged. I think GD will runaway when he sees this

David Hall to be Mgr for Angels of Anaheim 2009 season

PCSG has been very very good to Hall..........

    press release from PCGS:

    Inside PCGS
    By Jon Garner

Hall to Replace Scioscia as Angels Manager

In a stunning move, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announced that Manager Mike Scioscia will be taking a leave of absence for the entire 2009 season. Scioscia claims to be going on a scouting assignment in his homeland of Italy, but insiders say he is more interested in finding authentic Italian food than he is in finding Italian baseball prospects. He will be replaced for the 2009 season by PCGS Founder and veteran baseball coach David Hall.

"This is a dream come true," said Hall. "I have no doubt there will be a seamless transition, and with the veteran leadership we have, the Angels will contend for the World Series title this year and for years to come."

"Guarded optimism" seems to be the reaction of most Angel players and fans.

Is anyone surprised by this at all?????????????????????

Is anyone surprised by this at all?????????????????????

    I once had a vision:::
One day in the not to distant future there was a coin, a lovely chestnut brown 1803 Lg. cent in VF-35 that remained as a raw coin for all to hold and truly see it's beauty - it was the last coin on earth that had not been graded and entombed in plastic. The gods of grading ABCD-VP300X88 company decided since it was the last coin on earth that remained raw they would have to get it and encapsulate before it's value was realized.
You see, as a raw coin it's value ungraded was more than it's rival other large cents even in higher, "so called grades and entombed" already.
They formed a cartel, a syndicate, a collusion and forced the owner of the chestnut large cent to surrender his coin.
Now all coins were properly entombed and forever finally graded, "the right way" - this led to many things the grading company could have never dreamed would happen.

    1. There was no more excitement, no challenge in finding a coin that was struck nicer or had more luster or some variety.
    2. There was no Cherry Picking, you see all coins had been designated and were forever locked in plastic.
    3. The Mint had all there collector coins graded by the gods even before they sold them.
    4. There was no more circulated coinage, our society had learn to only use credit and debit cards and instant recognition plus thumbprint techknowlgy.
    5. Coin Collectors began to lose interest in collecting because all questions of authenticity and grade were already answered.
    6. The unthinkable happened everybody sold all their coins back to the mint or the gods at grading companies everywhere for cents on the dollar and coin collecting died, simple as that. I mean what is the use if every sandwich tastes the same, every car looks the same every store sells the same goods. We celebrate Christmas up to Christmas eve and then it's dead. We sell summer cloths until Memorial day and then as fashion must dictate we start the fall season before the first day of summer.

In essence we vanilla everything so as to have no more surprises and we pay the price - ultimate boredom and loss of interest and people lay down and die from being bored - I mean why live in a world were nothing is a surprise, there is no uncertainty, no mystery, no anticipation? What then will we do?
    It makes me sad!

I assume that's what this means. The mint itself is going to submit coins to PCGS and then sell graded coins via their website...right?

Until my recent reaquaintance with coin collecting after a 40+ year haitus, I did no know silver coins had a special ring when they are handled together. My father and I marveled over the new UHR and my lament was that I would never have a small stack to clink together to see how they felt, sounded. My dad is in his mid 80's and a lifetime magician who handled many, many coins over his years. He recently passed coins to me that few will ever see, much less fondle.

Yes, I use plastic to protect. But my new hobby includes searching rolls and the half dollars have now produced many lightly circulated proofs.

What joy to play with these without guilt!

The proofs are nicely made and after a few scratches, they show every sign of wearing well. I can carry them in my pocket and I doubt that they will ever NOT look like proof coins.

    Great rant!

Having a "service" grade coins didn't exist in 1963 to my knowledge and I find it to be quite annoying.

How can a grader ever capture the nuances of all the different varieties of business strikes? Varieties of the exact same coin, year and mint mark?

After handling sixty thousand half dollars since January of this year, I now have an eye that has seen so many coins to compare that I am not surprised to see something new every day I search.

BTW....picking up 10 boxes of halves today which will have to last me until next Monday. I finished eight thousand I picked up this past Monday on Tuesday night. OK, I am 0CD!

graders for the most part know what they are doing. if there were no TPG's the market that exists today would not exist. cold hard reality
