Hi! I'm very very new to all of this. I have a Liberty Head Five Dollar Gold from 1880. Mint condition. Just wondering how much it is worth.
Assuming that the coin is genuine (Lots of fake gold out there!) then its value is somewhere north of about $200
yes it is real, my grandfather won in in a spelling bee in 5th grade... how come on certain websites it says 276, ect... others it says 76,000????
what are the 276 and 76000 numbers in reference to? Also what sites are they from? I just don't have enough info to answer your question.
Sorry, like I said I am VERY new to all of this. I was on one web site (not sure of the names) that listed the prices of this certain coin as 200 dollars, then on a different site that listed the price as 76,000 dollars... big BIG differece in my world... It is in mint condition, but it does not have a code on it... like where it was made.... so I don't know if that makes a difference
Would you please post a link to the site with the $76K price, my interest is piqued. That price seems wildly out of line unless it is for a rare variety or mintmark and it is in the topmost condition. Otherwise $200-$300 seems reasonable.
Would you post a photo...its not easy to tell a value of a coin without grading the coin...it still could be a fake--back years ago fakes were circulated just like the real thing. The grade has a lot to do with the value.... As for the 76K it might have been talking about Proof Coins...not like what you say you have. Speedy
what's a proof coin? http://www.coinace.com/Inventory/Gold.htm about half way down the page... the picture (click to see it) looks just like mine... sorry I don't have a digital comera
Well you see that doesn't really work....each coin is like a finger print...so we can't give a grade without seeing a photo...it might be good for you to take it to a CoinDealer in your area. As for proof coins....here are some photos. The 1962 coin is a Proof...other coin are business strikes...they don't have the look like this coin does. Business strikes are what we use in everyday life...proof coins are mostly collector coins Speedy
Howdy chaosfairy - Welcome to the Forum !! The problem you are having understanding the price differences is because the 1880 $5 gold you are talking about on that web site is a Proof coin. They only made a total of 36 of those. But with the regular business stike 1880 $5 gold they made 3,166,436 of them. So - as you can see - the Proof version of this coin is quite rare while the business strike version is one of the most common. That's why the big price difference.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... I see! Thanks for the info guys.... I was just wondering... I could never part with it.. Well maybe if it really was a proof and worth 76,000!!! But not for a mear 200!!!! Thanks again! If you get a chance check out the "Oh Yeah" thread I started... I also have TONS of foreign coins, not sure what to do with those... I just have such random stuff *S*
