I'm looking at getting a nicer piece for my collection, and I want to get something for $30-$40 bucks. I was looking at perhaps getting a medium grade two cent piece. I was also looking at a slabbed high grade wheat cent. Or something else!! I'm not sure. If you were me, what would you get? Maybe I'll be inspired, and pick/buy your choice of coin Please help me out, Thanks! -Greg
Given your collecting interests, I'd go with the wheatie -- but I'd try and find one raw because I think in your price range you'll get a much better coin. However, I'm not sure anyone can really answer your question -- because what's right for you may not be right for me, and vice versa. That said, if I had $30-$40 and wanted to get a coin, I'd fine a nice choice well-circulated braided hair or matron head large cent -- I'm a sucker for circulated copper...Mike
You should go to the top of the page and click on Mesa Coins' ad. Jack specializes in Lincolns and can sell you a nice coin for a fair price. (Tell him I sent you!)
Dynamic Canadian striking error Look for a nice BU coin from Canada that includes a dynamic striking error like 35% off-center, double struck, etc. For $40 US or $40 Canadian, you could probably get a really nice raw coin. If you can't find one offered in Toronto, then contact Jim's coins in Madison Wisconsin or other error dealer. Very best regards, collect89
For $40, you could also find a very nice F/VF or better type coin, to be honest they are much more difficult than any $40 wheat cent unless you really pick the Lincoln series apart date by date.
Every time someone asks for a suggestion on what to buy I always say that is like asking who should I marry. Or What car should I buy, which house should I buy, what movie should I buy, etc. In other words, everyone has an opinion and they all may be like yours or none of them. If you listen to others and buy something based on what they say, you may end up really getting mad at everyone or loving them. Just to many differences of opinions. I suggest you just open a coin book, look through it for what you like. If the price is to high, wait until you have enough. If it is low enough, go for it now.
Well, I've read the suggestions so far and guess what? I agree - with all of them. Just Carl really nails it though. Get what YOU want. My first impulse is to say Two Cent Piece. Of course I'm a Two Cent junkie. Arizona Jack, a bona fide Lincoln nut, says maybe go for a type coin. There's nothing wrong with a real diverse collection if that's what suits you. Took me 30 years to decide upon building a Two Cent set. Here's a rundown of my latest purchases. Today: 1915-S Barber quarter. Price was right. Common Mexican 5 peso coin. Like the design. 1947 Panama Balboa. Like the design. Crisp Uncirculated 1957 Star notes (ooh paper money) Crisp Uncirculated 1957B silver certificates (more paper money) 1914-S Barber quarter (I'm hoarding these as sleepers) .....and the list goes on. Soooo... for $30-40 you could get. A Half Cent A Large Cent A Flying Eagle A nice Indian Cent A nice Wheat Cent A 70-S small date Lincoln A Two Cent Piece A Three Cent Nickel A Silver Three Cent Piece A Shield Nickel A Liberty (V) nickel A nice Buffalo Nickel A better Jefferson Nickel ....and the list goes. I realize this doesn't help - or does it? Get something you like at the best price you can and when you do would you please share the choice? Happy Hunting! clembo
Or you could be like me and become a Mercury Dime idiot. I've got well over 3,000 of those those things. 12 complete Whitman Albums of them. No, just buy what YOU like.
$40 wont get youa rarity unless you pay me the money and get my autograph. buy whatever appeals to you. if i were u i would go to the bank and get $40 worth of coins t roll search preferably penies
For me, I tend to buy based on my interest that day, which seems to change everyday. But mostly I look for deals, for instance last Sunday I bought a lot of (5) MS65-MS67 Roosie dimes, the Numismedia price was almost $200 and the PCGS price was almost $400, I paid just under $70 from Teletrade including shipping and the buyers premium. I usually add 30 or so coins to my tracking list, then build a spreadsheet with Numismedia and PCGS prices for each coin/lot. Depending on the coin, once that coin reachs 60-75% of the Numismedia price it comes off my list and spreadsheet. Typically, with about 15 min left in the auction I'm down to just a few coins. btw, I think Teletrade is waiving the buyers premium tonight. It'll be a coin buying bonaza for me tonight :hammer:
Like Mike - worn copper. The two large cents I posted over the weekend barely cost me 40 combined. And for 40 you could get something a little nicer if you look around. I also agree with everything everyone has posted - most important - when you decide post a picture(as mentioned already).
I'm leaning towards the MS-66 1943-S wheat cent. It's $34 with free shipping, and numismedia puts the coin at $45 and pcgs price guide at $50. I also found a two cent coin for $4!! It's a low grade, but I still will probably get it...
