OK, today when i went to my daily coin shop trip I picked up sever great things, but I saw a small piece of gold underneeth a bunch of bullion scrap coins. I looked at it and realized i was looking at something. I did some research and i have found out a lot about it. See if you can tell. Real or Fake? Identify The Coin!!!!!! Lets see who can figue it out...:desk:
I had to say fake. My reasonings: First, I couldn't find that pairing in any references to California gold. Second, there appears to be some greenish-blue specks appearing, meaning there is a copper content. All California gold pieces I've ever encountered were better than 90% pure as they weren't mixed with alloys. Thats my best guess. Guy~
I know absolutely nothing about California Fractional Gold and unless the same is true of your dealer, here is my reason why the coin is fake. Now I ask you, what would a real California Fractional Gold Piece from 1853 be doing sitting under some bullion scrap unless that is what it really is. I thank you for doing the research on this counterfeit coin so that I don't have to.
I actually found out what this EXACT piece is, im just trying to see if anyone else can find it. I paid 10 dollars for it so.... no loss... But someone find it, i did!!!!
Are you really asking us to attribute a counterfeit coin? I am curious, but not at all willing to do any work in that regard. I will wait for you to tell us.
My vote would be fake as it is my understanding all US Currency will have markings showing the Dollar amount. ie. Cents, Dime, Dol. Quarter. There are none shown on these.
I dont know. Paid $10, a bit spurious. I would ask an expert before buying, if real, of couse. Rather take a few knoks on the noggin than in the wallet. Enjoy what ever it may be.
I agree with Bud, the "baer" is a dead give away. I see those all the time on Ebay and it's a shame Ebay allows them to be sold as anything but replicas. :goof: Ribbit
Then why would you ask us real or fake? I don't know about the others, but I find it irritating when people post questions here they already know the answers to. We spend our time here to talk about coins and answer each others genuine questions. IMHO, an OP like this one is a waste of time.
I don't look at it that way. While I may know something is a fake, that doesn't mean everyone does. So something like this is educational for those that don't know the fakes. :thumb: And considering you can find a dozen of these on Ebay, at any given time, it's good to know about the fakes so you aren't tempted to buy one from a seller selling it as authentic: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1858-U-S-A-California-1-2-Dollar-22k-Gold-Coin-VF-Rare_W0QQitemZ220385121016 Ribbit
