I went to a show over the weekend and there was a few dealers selling silver proof state quarters for 12x face. I picked up 10 sets of the 2000 quarters and was wondering if I should of grabbed more? The 2000 sets are limited to 965,000. Does anyone else think it's a good deal?
well. that is the actual price you get there. $3.00 each. it is a good deal. retail value reached $4.00 - $4.50 each. i would buy a 5 pc set instead. you get a plastic case. and the coins were protected.
This is an ideal way to buy silver. You have a numismatic component which can outpace the silver and you might have protection on the downside. You might consider paying a bit more to buy sets that haven't been picked over if possible. It's hard to imagine how these won't do well in the longer term. If they are going to start getting melted for their silver content then that will just add fuel to the fire. Always exercise some care with premiums though if your interest is mostly in the silver.
well the entire 2000 set was worth about $25 not that long ago. i dont know if it makes it junk or not but a lot of deals on those coins can be had cheap. i personally love that collection the only complete collection i have BTW what a bummer
The entire series of proof sets is extremelyy low right now along with mint sets and commems. Now is a good time to buy if you are collecting them, investing, or whatever. Many base metal sets are barely selling much more than face value right now.
I'm not an expert, but I think it was a good purchase. I've actually been snagging these off of the bay myself; got a few very nice PCGS PR69DCAM silvers for under $8 a piece w/ S&H. I remember when I passed up on getting a 1999 silver proof set from the mint and have been kicking myself ever since because the value spiked so high (and so fast) due to very low production (800,000 if I remember correctly) and uber high demand for new shiny coins. My guess, and again - not an expert, is that eventually the 2000-2008 (and 2009 too maybe) silver quarters will all increase in value dramatically over the course of the next 5-10 years. Having said that, again, I would say you made a smart purchase at a very reasonable price. Cheers!
Very nice Pete!! Looks like a full set to me. Are you going to get the 2009 silver proof set as well? Do the 2009 25C count as state quarters or are they a new series? I myself decided (back in 1999) to go a different route and instead of the silver proof sets, I purchased a mint set each year. The mint, proof and silver proof are all awesome though. Potato, potato... that really loses something if you write it instead of saying it. Cheers!
