how common is it to find a franklin half?

I ask this because I have maybe went through about $1000 in rolled half dollars and of course the ones that come through the bank and haven't yet found a Franklin Half dollar. I don't know enough about collecting yet to buy any coin so every coin or bill that I have came from circulation or from finds at the bank.

I think I've been through about $6000 worth or better and have found 1. The only 90% I have ever found.

It's a great way to start a collection. I have never searched rolls of halves so I can't be sure, but from what I hear people finding, I would say that they are fairly rare to find. Walkers even maybe more common. Good luck searching!

    I've found.....
    1 64 (that one is 90% right?)
    5 65's
    1 66
    11 67's
    12 68's
    3 69's
    1 72S

Other than silver I'm not sure what to look for in the halves.

Yeah, the 64 is 90%. I also look for struck out of collar (I have a post on here somewhere with an example of those), no FG initials under eagles left leg, rotation, S mints, 2002 and later (even though they aren't worth much, but shouldn't be in circulation) and clipped planchet. There are a coupke other dates only issued in mint sets I look for as well. Basicly have a list of dates written really big on table next to me as I go though boxes. Cherrypickers guide confuses me as doubled die looks like Machine damage to me, so I don't really do that anymore. Good luck!

    Hi:

In addition to keeping anything up to and including 1970:

Look especially close at any 1974D- It could be a DDO! "In God We Trust"- especially the RUS of Trust is doubled and very pronounced.

*Also as mentioned by TheNoost, any S mint, they are proof coins not supposed to be in circulation.

    Good Luck!

If you going to look for anything in halves, I suggest you really get moving. I used to get about 2 to 10 rolls of halves a week and go through them. Then spend them as regular money. Lately in all banks in my area, no one will carry, order or handle half dollar coins. Here Bank of America and Chase have purchased most of the banks in the area. Bank of America has a policy that no more coins in bulk counted at thier locations and the ones that still have a coin counter, when those break down, out they go. They will not order halves for customers at all. They do not keep any halves in the vaults, nor at the tellers windows any more. Bank of Americal now will only take in coins for counting but they put them in a bag, ship out to somewhere for counting, the amount must be deposited in your account. Naturally there is a charge for that service. NO ACCOUNT? Then the charges go up. Any half dollars broght in must also be shipped out for counting to that same place.
As a joke I asked what if I brought in only one half dollar. With a straight face I was told the policy is it must be shipped out for counting.
Wonder what the charge would be for one half dollar to be counted?

Right now I don't have a problem finding them. I work at the bank and am in charge of the vault so I do the money ordering. I can order as many as I like and then buy and go through them and run the ones that I don't want through the coin counter. I guess I'm kinda lucky that way! Sometimes when I get a shipment in I can see a silver one in the end of the roll and just automatically buy that roll.

I used to find about one silver half per every three rolls searched. Then, it went to virtually nothing. After that, it became difficult to even find a roll, so I stopped. I never found a Franklin in a roll. By now, I think most of the silver has been pulled out of circulation.

    Wrong!

I have pulled 650 silver coins including 80 Walkers, 80 Franklins and the rest kennedy's since January of this year just by searching rolls.

No I would not have believed it.

I go through a lot of boxes which I have become highly efficient at.

I love opening a box with silver on the ends of the rolls.

Well, I'm not wrong. Let's review so even you'll understand it.

    1. "I used to find about one silver half per every three rolls searched." Without actually keeping track of every roll, this is approximately the find rate I used to have. So I'm correct.

    2. "Then, it went to virtually nothing." This is also a true statement. I stopped finding silver in the searches.

    3. "After that, it became difficult to even find a roll, so I stopped." Another statement of fact. My bank will not order rolls and they typically don't keep any at the branch.

    4. "I never found a Franklin in a roll." You are in no position to tell me I'm wrong on this. It just happens to be true that I've never found a Franklin.

    5. "By now, I think most of the silver has been pulled out of circulation." Your results are irrelevant to this statement, which is true on two accounts. First, it is a truism that most silver has been pulled from circulation. Second, regardless of what's going on in your part of the country, the silver around here is long gone.

So before you make a strong statement about something you are in no position to know, think twice young man.

Although occasionally you'll come across pockets of these coins, it not so often at all. Back in the late 70's and early 80's it was much more common.

That said, I would suggest that with unemployment at a high in many areas, long-held rolls will begin to come out of many homes and the likelihood of silver reappearing in these rolls would go up.

Sorry it came off like that, it was unintended.

My point was that they are still to be found.

I do realize that the half dollar is not really in circulation except in isolated cases.

No store orders halves any more and the registers don't have a spot in the tray for them.

All my rolls are ordered in boxes. Lots of them!

Please accept my apology, as I said, I meant no malice.

I started collecting in 1963 when silver was everywhere and I remember back then we thought it was gone by the early 70's when the bulk had been culled.

I am in shock that the boxes I get have silver at all.

I am getting plenty of boxes from the same bank that have coins in the 2000's that also contain silver so I know these are not old boxes that I have unearthed.

    Happy hunting.

As to the OP's question, I've been searching rolls on and off for several years- well in excess of 10,000. I've found about 25 or so Franklins, the last one in December of 2008. They are still out there around these parts, but finding one is a really rare treat.

You want to hear something really funny? A couple of years ago I was in the bank, so I asked the young lady helping me if they had any half dollars back in the vault. She gave me a funny look with her eyes and said to the manager, "This man asked if we have any HALF dollars." It became clear that she didn't even know what they were. Well, the manager explained to her that there was such a thing as a half dollar but that they didn't have any at the branch.

I;ve found a few Franklins in circulation but I don't search rolls. Needless to say it is very rare and getting almost impossible in NYC to get boxes or rolls or even individual halves. Ark might be better.
