I like them, but I don't own one yet. The rim/edge is the "third side" of the coin and the more visibility, the better.
O don't like the way they block the coin. There are better solutions for showing the rim including popping the coin up out of the surface of the slab. Ruben
Has anyone determined if mishandling one such as in shipping, might tilt the coin in the white plastic holder so it was no longer flat to the surface? Jim
Don;t care for them. They ruin the coin picture on small coins. I have seen Morgans in them and they look great, cents are just too small for all that plastic.
I like them but don't own one yet either. I agree that they do seem to be a bit intrusive on smaller coins. I don't know why they wouldn't use clear plastic. The plastic could hide a rim nick though.
The prongs ruin a good picture and hide the rims too much on circulated coins. The rims are of great importance on circulated coins, it makes it harder to buy the coin and not the holder.
I do not like the prong look. They distract my eye from fully appreciating the coin (and yeah, I know all about the edge justification). A secondary issue are the prongs interfering with being able to take good pictures. They are annoying. I will avoid buying NGC pronged slabs. If there is a coin I have to have, then I'll try and cross at PCGS (although, I'm not a member and don't want to pay the fee).
Havent seen PCGS's new holder, (anyone got a pic?) but the ANACS clear view is da bomb! It stacks so well with other clearview slabs and the coin spec's are listed on the edge, so you can read them easily in a stack.
I love em! Its like the coin is being presented in the holder. as far as rim nicks go; ngc will body bag coins with rim nicks if they are severe. A word of warning if you like the new holder; NGC still does not have a full supply of them. I recently sent in a rather large order (18 coins) and 5 of them came back in the old holder. I called to complain and they said that they are waiting for more to be produced, and some coins may be put into the old holders. They did say that they should have the issue worked out by October, and that i could send them in for re-holdering GRRR! I did send in some coins for re-holdering into the new edgeview, and specifically stated that on my submission form, I am pretty sure if you ask for it they will do it.
You mean like DCGS (Digital Coin Grading Service) did? Problem there is the slabs don't stack. Modern Coin Grading Service did solve that problem though. The coin was in a pop up type holder that was still recessed into the slab. Unfortunately they only had that on their first generation slab. On their second they placed an Intercept Shield type insert around the coin and that ruined their good idea because you couldn't see the edge anymore.
Yes - I have already seen a coin that has rotated in its pronged holder so that problem still exists - I will try to find the picture I am sure it did not go out the door this way. I have a 60 coin order going in and going to request the OLD HOLDER.
