I agree with ksproul on this one. Heck, the next time you go to the bank, ask the teller for $10 in cents, see where that gets you.
The only way to avoid the critics is to donate that collection to the girl scouts and change your name.
We found a few thousand of the smallest circulating denomination in various jars, cans and bottles while settling up my step-mom's estate. A cursory inspection found many wheaties. Time constraints led us to the coin starWhat a shame. Weight kept me from bringing them on the plane. Should have shipped them. Scary what might have gone in the machine. TD bank does it for free in their penny arcade machine. Coinstar will redeem them for free if you convert them into certain gift cards.
I have an estimated 50,000 Lincoln Cents.I always thought our kids would take charge of them, and look for little treasuers, but they are busy and I don't think that's going to happen. So, one of these days, down to the bank they'll go.
Grantshire: Although it has been missed so far let me say: WELCOME TO THE FORUM. Please stick around and continue asking about coins. As to your problem. 1. I suggest you acquire a coin book for possible error or valuable coins. 2. The Red Book by Whitman Publishing is a decent one for that. 3. You would note there are possible really valuable coins in that mess. 4. Yes it may take time looking through all those but one find of a 72 Double Die would more than make it worth the effort. 5. After your done looking through all those, put them up for sale on ebay as UNSEARCHED COINS. Everyone else does you know. 6. As to PENNIES vs CENTS. There have been numerous posts on this very forum about that controversy. At one time someone listed all the Songs that say PENNY. Possibly 298,000,000 people in the USA say PENNY, not CENT. And that is out of the possible 300,000,000 people here. 7. Regardless of what anyone says, always remember this is America and we made our own language. Ain't no word we can't use if we don't want to. 8. Try singing that famous song PENNIES FROM HEAVEN by replacing PENNIES with CENTS. Makes no CENTS. Again, WELCOME TO THE FORUM.
I would check to see if their is a local Coin club in the area to see if anyone would be interested there. They would be glad to pay over face for them. Or check out a local coin show. They would also be interested in them.
Try to buy a book to put your pennies in? Nickels, Dimes, quarters and Halves Not a problem. Pennies: http://www.tradewindssupplies.com/items/coin-supplies/dansco/dansco-coin-albums/list.htm http://www.whitmanbooks.com/default.aspx?page=80&SubCatOID=6 http://www.whitmanbooks.com/default.aspx?page=80&SubCatOID=11 Tubes http://www.whitmanbooks.com/default.aspx?page=80&SubCatOID=65 Seems the collectors prefer the term Cent. I guess it's a term for non collectors to call them Pennies? LOL
A friend of mine happens to be in Richmond today and tomorrow. He'll gladly take them off your hands for me . . .
First, thanks for the welcome. Forums are interesting places, full of information and there are always very knowledgeable people on them. I have belonged to several for years (related to my other hobbies) and most of them are quite friendly, that is why I went looking for this sight when my "penny project" popped up. And, FYI to all, I have also joined a couple of firearm, and Lionel train forums recently, searching for the best outlet for items appropriate to those forums. In helping my friend with this estate I have been designated lead on the pennies, stamps, firearms, trains, and other coins (silver & gold). My wife is assisting with the china, silver, and other collectibles. I have a full time job, family and other obligations so I cannot pursue all of these at the same time (and I am not taking any compensation for any of this). I am an amateur coin collector and I admit it. While I have a fair amount of money invested in the coins I have most real collectors would turn their nose up at most of what I have. My friend knows nothing about coins (or the other areas I mentioned) so he asked me for help. The Memorials are just the beginning of the coins and probably represent the lowest collective value. For now, we have set aside the silver and gold coins (please don't ask about them) and plan to catalog them this coming winter once we are out from under more pressing matters. The same goes for the stamps. Several of you have sent me PM's and I have given one of you first shot at the pennies/cents/Memorials or whatever you consider the correct name for these small copper coins with Lincoln on them. And , yes, there are wheats, Indian Head and other cents in other bags that will be posted up later. For now, I am just trying to move the 350-500 pounds of Memorial pennies. Thanks again for the welcome, advise and running commentary. If I didn't know better I would swear some of you guys are on the other boards I belong to.
Those pennies weigh more than my fiance & I put together! Unless the pennies are already organized I wouldn't even bother. No wonder there was a penny shortage when I lived in VA. Oh and on the silver & gold chains use a magnet to weed out the fakes. Some are marked gold but it ends up that it's just the clasp is gold & the rest is plated. Not many into trains but if they are older collectible ones that's good. Stamps if they are newer than 1930, just use them if you don't collect them. What few dealers out there that buy them are not even paying face for them.
