    I'm very interested in collecting ancient coins, but have no knowldege/idea where to start. Can anybody give me some pointers on where to start (books, websites) and tell me what coins I should first buy to give me a little collection that is still affordable?

    Thanks

    *Edit*
    I'm mostly interested in roman/judea/greek kinds of things.

    Welcome to the forum, and to the Hobby of Kings. :)
    I'm not very much involved in that branch of the hobby, but if you post specific questions here, chances are there will be at least one member who can answer you, or at least point you in the right direction.

    You can also >> click here << or >> here << for websites of some top-flight ancient dealers.

    Josh Moran at Civitas is my own extremely knowledgeable and helpful "go-to guy" for questions on ancients.

    Clicking on the "Discussion" button at the top of Forvm's site takes you to a discussion group exclusively about ancients.

    Firstly i'm not an Ancient coin collector so i'm by no means an authority figure here but;

    Cheaper issues that i've seen tend to be of the Roman period. It might be worth while dipping your toes into those shallower and cheaper waters and getting a feel for the vast world of Ancients. From there you can go anywhere... finances permitting.

    Greek coins are always popular too, but Roman seems to be more widely available for less cash. But beyond those there are Persian coins, Celtic coins, coins from Byzantium.. the list goes on.
