hello - i am a newbie at this - has anyone bought ancient greek coins on ebay? Anyone know of the seller Axismundi.com? They seem to have gorgeous crisp clear greek coins - and seem to back them up with "expert" authentication... but gutt feeling bothering me - anyone have thoughts? thankshttp://cgi.ebay.com/2300-Year-Old-Huge-SILVER-Coin-of-ALEXANDER-the-GREAT_W0QQitemZ350162981451QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item350162981451&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50 example:
If it looks brand new I would steer clear. Just my opinion. Someone with ancient coin knowledge will come along and post.
If you copy & paste a link to the actual auction, I'm sure some experts here would be able to help. I'm a newbie too, sorry I can't help much.
thanks - they say they are backed up by an ACCS coind authentication service - David R sear... it all sounds backed up but... i am weirded out by how PERFECT ALL the coins are...How does one dealer get so many awesome ancient coins?? no one else seems to have that - used to be Ebay was full of NICE old greek coins - but suddenly it stopped. dunno - but thanks for the response
The seller has a ton of positive feedback. I'm no expert on Alexander Drachms by any means, and maybe that particular one is special because of where it was struck, or the amount of detail...however I will say that I paid only $90 for mine last year (below), so the sellers "Buy It Now" for $498 seems rather steep.
Bayrose we have some really smart guys who collect ancients, check over on the world and ancient posts maybe that'll help. This ebay seller maybe great but as I said I dont collect ancients so dont take my word for it.
ebay coins ooo - pretty! k - the thing that is weirding me out is these guys have ONLY perfect coins.. i grew up in the middle east so i know lots of forgeries are out there...i never have seen so many perfect coins being offered at no reserve..but they offer authentication - but then again authenticity depends on who is authenticating... seems to be little info on this kind of stuff
If they come with certification from ACCS they will almost certainly be genuine. Sear knows his stuff. As to the prices he wants I can have no opinion because it's not my field.
