Hey guys. I was flipping through the latest National Geographic magazine, and came across a story of a sunken ship on its way to New Orleans 210 years ago.
Apparently the loot discovered has been $100,000,000+ and they are selling them off. I called the number on the page and talked to a representative and she told me the coins were handpicked for the best ones, and they are shipped uncleaned. She told me cleaning coins ruins them so they just take the best condition ones, throw them in no name slabs and sell them for 44$ each.
Can I get some opinions on this? I mean.... 44 dollars for a shipwreck coin isn't that bad, is it?
Here is a link to the website they showed,

If I was to pick one of these up (or a few) would it be in my best interest do preserve them a bit better? I can't imagine these will last very long now that they have been removed from the ocean.
    Thanks,
    Shawn

I guess those are from "El Cazador." If you just want one for general interest and the history, I'd say go for it! The ones I've seen for sale elsewhere don't look too bad.

It seems like a good price. I wonder if it's from the El Cazador shipwreck. If it is that great because that shipwreck has a pretty cool story. Here is a link that I found when I bought my 8 reale from the El Cazador
    http://www.elcazador.com/
I found a set with a 1783 MO NGC Certified El Cazador 8 reale, 1922 NGC BU Peace Dollar, 1884-O NGC BU Morgan and a 1974 NGC BU Ike dollar in it and bought it in January for about $140 with shipping. I like the shipwreck coin the best and bought the set just for the it. The other 3 coins were just a bonus for G. :) When we went to the FUN show in January a dealer had an 8 reale similar to the one I bought in the set. It was also NGC, same year, same mint mark but not as nice in hand as mine and he was asking $300 just for that one coin. G said we could do much better price wise, so I waited and it paid off. :high5:

It's one of those Franklin Mint things and I never would have paid their price or bought directly from them, but we paid less than 1/2 than the price they're asking so I'm happy with what we got and what we paid. :thumb: We've got another 8 reale, but it was "harshly cleaned" and we weren't aware of that when we bought it. :( It's too bad because it's a nice coin, but in hand it looks dull and doesn't look as nice as my shipwreck coin. I really want one of the pillar dollars from Peru next. I like those too and I would like to find a certified shipwreck one in good shape. :)

    Hey

I posted on this a while ago, and mine came in last week. It's pretty cool, I don't care that the quality isn't so great. I mean it's from a shipwrek and last saw the light of day in 1783!!! I love it. I tried to buy one off Ebay soon after in better quality and the bidding shot up way beyond what I wanted to spend. I'm glad to own one in any case.

This looks better than I thought it would, when I saw your previous post. I likely bid against you, also unsuccessfully, for that coin on ebay.
