The best looking coin would be . . . The one that you, the collector, enjoy looking at the most. For me, I like the Walking Liberty Half Dollar ( which was the inspiration for the SAE) Coolest looking Eagle on the reverse too! IMHO
GMTA - Funny, I was just thinking the same thing Fla - before viewing your reply I was thinking that I really liked that coin alot. Maybe because I remember my Dad having them when I was younger. It is a pretty coin. I also like the buffalo nickels altho I don't have any. There are a LOT of beautiful coins out there in the mid to higher grades, but design-wise, the Walking Libery half is one of my faves.
The three most beautiful, in a classical sense, are Saints, Walkers, and Draped Busts. The most handsome, in a rugged American sense, is the Buffalo nickel. American Gold and Silver Eagles are nice variations on a theme, as is the Buffalo dollar.
My favorites, in no particular order... St. Gaudens Standing Liberty Quarter Pan Pac Half Trade Dollar Peace Dollar There are a bunch of other ones too, as you can see I'm indecisive!
I just got back from the Long Beach show. There were lots of truely beautiful coins there! The two extra high relief Saints were really nice, the proof Stella, the vast array of red Indian Head Cents... But I just saw for the first time a high grade matte proof Indian $10 coin. Now I know some don't like that design. But I sure fell in love with how that coin looks! So for the moment that is my favorite
Ahh, how could I have forgotten the $10 Indian?? http://www.geocities.com/chrystawilson/10dollarobv.html http://www.geocities.com/chrystawilson/10dollarrev.html Not my coin. Don't I wish.
Following a Pattern All the choices are nice... No one suggested the Susan B. Anthony or Franklin Half... If you want to see some really choice American coins, get a copy of a Patterns book. Adams and Woodin was the first. Then came Judd and Kosoff. The current one is by Andrew Pollock from Q. David Bowers. There is also a club with a website: http://www.uspatterns.com These are the coins that did not get made. In the late 1800s, Morgan and the Barbers made a lot of designs, some of which -- for instance for the 20cent -- would have been better than the final selections. 20th century patterns are interesting, but the 19th century patterns are gripping.
I truly like the walking liberty half dollar and the silver eagle for silver and St Gaudens $20 for the gold.
I have to agree with those that chose the Walker half. When I was just a little one, I remember those coins were by far my favorite design. I think that it is one of the few coins that still have nice appeal in mid-grade. I really do like it when the darkness in the low areas really brings out liberty and the eagle. I don't know if this really counts, but I really do like the design on the current platinum eagles. I think that its unique simplicity is very appealing. The platinum also has almost a reverse proof look that is stunning. I hope that collector appeal grows on these, as I am starting to pick up a few of them.
the best american eagle silver dollar and walking liberty silver half are the most beautiful coins on earth. that is only my choice.
