I have a bad habit of dipping coins. Not sure if I have ever helped myself since I don't think I have ever tried to sell any. I have been looking for nice big silver coins right around melt (although melt IS high now) and recently bought this 1965 5 lirot Israeli coin. Here's it's journey... As bought the 900 means 90% silver, but I didn't like it. Instead of using acetone, I used isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol and then a hot water rinse... I then proceeded to "dip" the coin in eZest simply by holding it between thumb and forefinger and swishing and then holding another spot and swishing...followed by a thorough hot water rinse and blot dry. Picture on left before dip, right after. Since it is "junk" silver, I don't think I hurt it.
This appears to be the sodium carbonate/aluminum foil treatment that I have seen everyone warn against. I used eZest.
They now look like our dipped silver service, to be perfectly honest about it. But anyway, there are hundreds of silver dips out there that would have done that same job, and if you like it, that's really all that matters.
