I'm a 13 year old coin collector, I'm very interested in collecting and have read the red book and about 13 issues of coins magizene cover to cover. But there are not many kids my age that are into collecting coins. I've been tring to get more kids to get serious about collecting, but kids my age are too caught up in sports and school to care about coins. Do you think kids should be introduced to coins at an even younger age, because, they are the future of our hobby?

I started when i was 5, but hey you know collecting is in the genes. You're either a collector or not. Can't change that i'm afraid.

What you can do though is find people that already collect things and convert them over to coins.

Others like my mother, my cousin, my other cousin and my aunt all view collections of any kind as 'junk', it takes up room, it clutters the place up. These people will never be converted.

Hi and welcome. My 9 year old daughter WAS into coin collecting and searching for Bison Variety coins until we learned that they are just "spenders" Now she's into other things...lost another one.

Well good luck here, I had none.

She might come back to it though in the future, the seed is sown, it might be dormant until she's an adult.

I've tried giving some of my friends common old coins like buffalos and mercreys to get them interested and it kinda worked.

Especially if you explain the fact of the 1942/1 overdate to them... it will raise some interest... especially if you've just handed over a 1942.

good idea i'll try that. I've also tried giving them error coins, they like that because they think there all worth alot. But i hate to disipont them when they find out not all of them are expensive.

I find with collecting some get into it because they think they can find that elusive date! So they go through coin shop junk trays looking for them... of course they'll never find them in there but i find although some will give up the search and leave coins, some will actually be infected with the coin bug whilst attempting the 'get rich quick' scheme. By the time they realise they are unlikely to find that 1943 copper cent well it's usually too late, they're hooked.

Sure--I started a about 5-6 years ago and am still collecting...even though I don't have any other young collectors I think I'll find more sometime...

I have tried to get some other guys started but most of them just don't like it...I'm still working on my bro-in-law...but most people don't see coins as anything but a coin worth face....I see it more than that.

You can buy a roll of bisons pretty cheap (except on ebay ;) ) and pass them out to your friends. It might stimulate interest in coin collecting, and it might not. It’s like planting seeds: you plant a few hundred and hope that some of them take root.

A few months ago I bought a few rolls of bison nickels, passed out about 40 of them to family and people at work. One of them got interested enough to become a collector. It won’t always work, but this time it did.

Even if no one decided to collect, I still had fun seeing the expressions on faces when they saw their first 2005 nickel.

For a bit more money, you could package the nickels in Air-Tites or 2x2s first. That way the recipient is less likely to spend it right away. He or she will hang onto it a while longer as “special” and might get the coin bug if they look at it on their dresser long enough.

Another thing: even if you don’t find someone your age interested (what about school clubs ?), there’s always internet forums like this one. We’ll be your internet friends !

And, some of the folks here are pretty young, like the very smart whipper-snapper who posted right before I did here. Speedy knows fifty times as much as I do about coins, and he’s very generous about sharing what he knows.

    Thanks Bacchus...but I don't think that is true ;--)
All I know is from guys on this forum (and other places) who have helped me alot...also when I have a little bit of time for reading I like to read about coins.

Usually people who inherited collections from their family are interested in what the coins are. Those people are usually much easier to convert :D

Usually only interested in how much those coins are worth in my experience!

I started when I was around 5. I think it takes a certain mindset (intellectual curiosity ?) and an appreciation of history to fully appreciate coins and coin collecting. Some have it, others don't.

I inherited but thats not why I started. The bicen quarter got me going along with those SQs. Then when I had (you could call it) flashback, I remember my dad and I going to the bank deposit box, and placing in some really big silver coins. So when I remembered, I asked my grandma and it turned out that my grandma would gladly give me the silver coins (Morgs and Peaces) and she had a whole other collection of every denomination in the old old harris folders from so long ago. Then when I asked my dad about when he was a child, was grandma always putting coins in there, and he said most of the time but the old old stuff is from my great great aunt that was the first family member here from Poland and starting the first family here
