Hi, I was looking through an old coin purse left by my mother (deceased) and found a 1944 quarter with what looks like it might be a stamping error. My knowledge about coins is nearly nonexistent, so I thought it would be advisable to ask an expert. Can anyone tell me if my mother has left an error coin in her purse? Is it of any value? Thanks for any assistance you can provide. SteveDK
It is worth its silver content, which is currently $4.61. The oddities you see are gouges, like someone took a knife to it. Not an error - definitely damaged.
She may have kept that coin for a reason. I would hold onto it for sentimental value. Cash value: $4.61 in silver. It does look interesting. Although I don't think another coin was impressed onto it. Since there is no reverse photo, I assume it is normal. It's sort of cool looking the way it is. But if Cutler is correct, then it's just damage.
You should be able to unload it for around $3-4. Unless you really need the money, I'd just keep it. But whatever you do, don't spend it as a quarter. It's not an error, it's just damaged. But it is 90% silver.
Thank you, gentlemen, for the information. The quarter will remain in my possession... it does have a great deal of sentimental value SteveDK
