    Hey guys,

So, I took my first leap into buying a new coin to start the upgrading of my current IHC collection. I wanted to start with higher grades than I currently had. I also wanted to buy proffesionally graded coins from a TPG service. I bid on this 1909 IHC MS63 and I remember reading from what you guys said that not all MS63 are the same. I thought this looked nice at first, but now I am seeing a HUGE ding on the jaw of the princess. The pictures do not seem that bad and the mark is in 2 seperate pics. So I cannot dicifer if it is on the coin or the holder. Thankfully, I am only the high bidder by a couple of bucks and I am sure I will be outbid or not meet the reserve price. The Red Book says the coin is only worth about 60 bucks so I don't know if I will go any higher on the price. Just looking for comments any help would be great.

    Thanks again,

I can't believe it is MS-63 with that scratch on the cheek. The reverse looks rotated from the images?

Avoid that coin ( scarface ) and just watch for a while. You will find that Red Indians trade for well over book/sheet/guide prices. Hold on for one, and in the meantime, browse these sites:

    www.thepennylady.com
    www.indiancent.com

read and learn before you spend;)

EDIT: not too late to retract your bid

If you are still the high bidder retract your bid
It is a nice coin, but that scratch bothers me as well...Wait and look around, you'll find a nice one!

Thanks guys, I have never retracted a bid before and I just went ahead and said I put in the wrong amount that I wanted to bid. thanks for the heads up. I feel slightly bad about it, but once I saw that mark I was disheartened. You guys have helped me immensely trying to figure all of this out. It seems no matter how much research you do there are still more real world situations that you have to contend with. Thanks again.
    Cheers,

I'm not going to say to bid on this coin, but, it is a slabbed coin, and the scracth could be on the holder. The last pic doesn't seem to show the same sctrach.

    xtr,

I agree with you that was my original thought, but on the far away pic you cannot see the detail and on the two close pics the camera gets a different angle and the mark appears in the same place. So, I would rather be safe than sorry. I don't want to be dissapointed on buying my first slabbed coin. I would assume that if the coin is as good as it looks, that one ding could lower it to the MS63 area. Maybe that is my inexperience talking, but something about it doesn't seem right.

The seller cannot MAKE you pay if the reserve has not been met ;) And you can retract your bid by going into the bidding history, and near the bottom it has a bid retraction form :)

If it is a cut across that cheek I don't see how it got into a holder.

That's what I was thinking. I was surprised they graded it? :rolling:

I think if it was a ding from another coin edge ( and not a scratch) it obviously graded, but that is probably what brought it down from a possible 65 ( as it does appear to be that quality of coin from the small photos) to 63.

It's hard to believe one little scratch can knock a coin down, possible 65 to 63...

WOW, that is one nasty gash. I am very surprised it even made its way into a holder.

Welcome to copper it ain't no cake walk.

Welcome to copper it ain't no cake walk. There are 63's and then there are 63333333333,s - don't worry so much if you win it - it will help you learn either way. Always remember not only with copper but most all series, a well selected AU-58 can oftentimes be a superior coin to even an MS-63 in terms of strike and eye appeal.

    ask the seller!

Why not send the seller a message, asking if it the mark is in the holder or the coin? His answer, via email, will be the proof you need -- if he's lying it's fraud.

FWIW, numismedia lists MS-63 from brown ($50) to red ($90)

And in those cases, do we ever see an AU-58 priced more than the MS-63, if it's a superior coin in terms of strike and eye appeal?
