You're right, the description there is obsolete, I'm going to work up a new structure for it. Thanks for pointing that out. :)

I have to agree with ERRORCOINS on this one, Peter. The "Anything Goes" statement is somewhat ambiguous. I certainly see his point. Thanks for making the effort to change the forum's description; it might lead to a lot less confusion in the future.

I'm insulted all the time being a sales rep but after 20 years in the medical field I still smile. I also learned that when sending a message or e-mail about something I'm passionate about I type it, leave it and read it again to make sure it's just the facts with no emotion. It had to dispute facts but it's easy to attack emotion.

Most of what ERRORCOINS is saying, I agree with. If he wants to collect error coins and post pics of them, I say "more power to him". Perhaps he should post them in the Error Coins section, but I also understand that that particular forum has few visitors (at least it seems that way).

I think he's upset because some folks aren't realizing that many of the new Bisons appear to be having an extraordinary amount of defects. He's simply trying to point this out and, in many cases, I agree with him. And, even if they ARE realizing that they have defects, they're not making a big deal out of it. I agree that people are entitled to their own opinions one way or the other. In the case of the Bisons, ERRORCOINS is obviously very passionate about this topic. And again, I say "more power to him".

I appreciate everyone's passion when it comes to coins whether it be gold, Morgan Dollars, Indian Cents, errors or whatever. It's not necessarily the coins themselves that are interesting, but the people behind those coins, too. That's why I'm on this forum and enjoy the enlightening topics discussed here.

So, how about everyone taking a deep breath, relax and let ERRORCOINS continue with his passion for error coins? I for one, enjoy them immensely.

It would be tough to 'legislate' what is considered collectable. If someone wants to collect dimes with green spots on them, then they are collectable and should be worthy of discussion on a forum like this one without derision. Folks don't think dimes with green spots on them are collectable, that's OK too, but they should really think about deriding someone for what they like to collect. Everybody doesn't like something, doesn't mean it's wrong for someone else to like it, though. Tolerance is a good thing. Try to spend more time talking about the things you like and less time putting people down for what they like. I collect major errors/varieties and minor ones, like coins struck with damaged dies.

Wasn't too long ago that coins with doubled dies that could only be seen with a magnifying glass were thought to be worthless. I collected those coins for years before anyone wanted to talk about them with me, but now there are several books detailing minor doubled dies on Eisenhower dollars, Kennedy halves, and so on. All are now considered by many to be totally worthy of discussion. Some folks still think of those varieties as worthless, and that's OK, but you hardly ever hear anyone putting people down for being enthused about collecting them.

Lately, the attitude of this forum seems to have changed from the free and open discussion of people's diverse interests in coin collecting to a forum where it is appropriate to scold people for their interests. That limits the free and open discussion to just the things a few people want to talk about or else face the ridicule of those who do not see the joy of collecting things outside their limited interests. Maybe the 'moderators' should make a list of coin discussions allowed on this forum. What ever happened to the happy part of coin collecting?

As has already been suggested - when you make a post on a forum like this - you should think about what you are saying before you say it. And no matter what you do say - say it in such a way as to NOT offend someone else.

Now sometimes that's almost impossible to do. That's because some people take offense at anything said that disagrees with their opinion. Right there is the problem. For when that happens - tempers flare - and another post is made. And then people start to take sides and post their opinions. And another post is made, and another. First thing ya know you have a dozen or more people all mad at each other - just because they disagree. And they all feel that they have to defend themselves and defend their opinions. And then they quit thinking about what they say - before they say it.

Now I don't take sides - I can't. My responsibility here as a moderator won't let me. And believe it or not - neither do any of the other moderators. We just follow the rules - applied fairly and equally to everybody. Of course that all sounds well and good - until those rules are applied to YOU. Then, sometimes, not always of course - a member immediately feels he is being singled out, treated unfairly. But he's not. Not a one of us here does that.

There are people on this forum that I have considered friends for quite a few years - and ya know what ? If they do something wrong or break the rules - they hear about it from me - just like everybody else does if they break the rules. There are no favorites - everybody is equal. And all the other moderators treat people the same way I do.

We're all here to have fun folks - even the moderators. We volunteer to do this - out of our love for the hobby. It's a tough job - you ought to try it sometime. We don't like to edit posts - or delete them - or move them - or do anything to them. We just like to read them - hoping to learn something. We want every member here to be able to talk about any numismatic subject they choose to talk about - as long as they do it in a friendly, courteous and civil manner. The rules here are pretty simple - they are plainly posted and easy enough to follow. And if they are followed - no problems.

Now most of the time - that's just how it is. But every now and then people are gonna disagree - that's a fact of life. And every now and then somebody gets upset because of a comment that is made. That's gonna happen too - that's another fact of life. But these things can be limited to few occurrences. But it takes YOU - the members of Coin Talk - to do that. You can express your opinion, whether you agree or disagree. But do it in such a way as to not offend another member. Think about what you are saying before saying it. Don't make it personal.

Now we all know how to do this - we do it every day. But for some reason, when you are writing on a forum, the anonymity of it makes people forget their manners. That's really all it is - that's all it takes - good manners. We were all taught them and we know how to use them. All it takes is treating others as you'd like to be treated yourself.

So let's all try and keep that in mind.
