    Hi to all,

After being out of collecting for a number of years I've decided to get back in and collect my favorite coin the Morgan Silver Dollar. I currently have an 1884CC that I won on bid it is PCGS slabbed and although I am pretty good at grading I am wondering what you all think the grade and value of this coin is? I am particularly unsure of how the spots on the Obverse (Reverse is clean) would impact it.

This is by far the best group of coin people I've found so I look forward to being a new member and getting our input.

    Thanks!

    Len

We would probably need pics of the rev to guess the grade. But it looks like a 65 to me. If its in a PCGS holder it will probably be easy to sell, but I think the spots will drive some buyers away.

Actually you are spot on, no pun intended with the 'spot' comment :D

It's an MS65 PCGS, I'm wondering if it developed the spots over time after being graded. I have a couple of day return allowed on the coin and before making a final decision I want to have it in hand to look at, it should be here by end of week. I liked the coin but just wasn't sure about the spotting and thought I'd give it a closer look. It went for ~$320.

Any other thougts and comments are most welcome.

    Thanks for your thoughts!

Is the coin in a newer PCGS holder, or one of the older green ones? If its in a newer one It probably had the spots before it was graded. If you like the coin keep it, it's a very nice coin, and $320 is a very good price.

Yes it's newer not a rattler OGH. I'll probably keep it but will wait until it is in hand to be sure. I'm more into the white Morgans although there are some toned ones that look nice toned coins have not really been my thing, I presume the spots were the start of the toning, not sure about that, but since they are small I may still hang on to it.

    Thanks again for your comments.

    Where was this auction? Ebay?

Any Morgan I have ever seen PCGS MS-65 is listed at a fortune (usually at least a thousand $) You were very lucky to get this for $320 and have it PCGS Slabbed.

    Congrats!

    Hi,

Actually there are many slabbed NGC and PCGS coins in MS65 that go for hundreds less than $1K. Best bet is to check the Gray Sheets and past auctions at Heritage, which I believe to be a much better auction alternative to ebay and a very informational website on coins in general. I've mainly bought from Heritage. Many non-key Morgans that are slabbed can still be had for a reasonable prices. Also in a non-bid environment I have sometimes gotten a good price from Secured Rarities but you have to pick through what they offer and be there at the right time as they can go fast, the other offers are OK in price but can be high depending upon the Gray Sheets and past auction comparisons.

    Best of Luck!

    The first 8 looks doubled....
I'll compare you pictures to some others, but you might have a VAM somewhere on the coin

Thanks for the comments! And BTW good eyes you have, you know I've starred at it for quite a bit and didn't catch the possble 8 double! I'll really have to look closely when it's in hand. Thanks again for the info and compliments!

I enlarged the pic around the date area also does it look like a possible die line around the date and stars?

It might just be my eyes playing tricks on me but, that other 8 looks double stamped too... And that die line, is present as well...
If all of this is true, you got one steal of a deal!

I would call it a 64, and the spots would bother me.

A blast white coin with black spots would turn me off too.
