My favorite part of coin collecting is the history. It is neat to thinc that that Indian head Cent or Two Cent may have been in a pocket on a Civil War battle ground, of even in President Lincoln's pocket.

I'm with you on the history angle. Years ago when my kids were young I did a presentation to elementary age kids using my type coins. They were amazed that there were more than the coins they see today. Then we would talk about what was going on in our county on the dates the coins were minted.

I guess I have to say history. I'm actually not totally sure why I like collecting, I just like it and don't question it!

For me the intrigue of coin collecting is definitely the history. I also like the artwork entailed in the coin designs, but most of all it's the history. I like to take a moment when I aquire a new coin and recall what happened the year the coin was released.

History, art, beauty. I also have to admit I enjoy owning a collection of something that many know are quite beautiful, but know little to nothing about what they are looking at.

I like the history part of it. When I hold a coin minted during lets say World War 2, I feel I am taken back to that era. Also when I hold a coin I wonder where its been. Like a coin from the UK in 1912. That coin could have been in Winston Churchill's pocket once. Or a Large Cent from 1852. Abraham Lincoln might have used that Cent to buy a Newspaper.

History I guess. Plus, the fact that I'm being a part of preserving a piece of physical history so that future generations may enjoy it as well. I think we're more curators than mere collectors.

The history attached to a coin, from the time period to the person or event depicted to the manufacturer in some cases and of course the art of the designer.
Then there is allways the joy of suddenly seeing something new or unusual when out buying coins and notes :D

history, art, and a connection with my father and son. heck, even my father-in-law is into coins so i have a greater bond with him as a result. three generations all looking at coins at the table together smiling and having fun, how cool is that?

Same for me. I also do genealogy, so coin collecting seems to compliment all the history I learn while researching my family. I recently obtained a very large Civil War pension file on one of my great-great-grandfathers, and reading through it I've learned so many great things about him, it almost feels like I've personally met him. Then I'll find a Morgan dollar or other coin from around the late 1800's and think, he could have touched this coin at some time, these coins are what he saw and handled in his day-to-day life. Very cool stuff!

My favorite thing about coin collecting is the history behind the coins, reading and learning about the coins that I like and the feeling of finally completing each set.

I definitely love the art, and history that come with each coin. I agree with Noost too, I enjoy hunting for specific coins. Also for some reason I just love to collect things, LOL I think I was born with it.

Like many others, it's the historical aspect of being able to hold and own something from another time combined with interest in monetary history and the time when precious metals = money. That's probably why I'm not overly impressed with moderns.
