Hey, It looks like from the teeth of a vise .“Squeeze Job” or “Vice Job” or Garage Job” (error-ref.com)
I ponder on this coin. If indeed it was a vice job wouldn't every element of the steps be erased? If you blow the image up ( Thanks to the op for adding a large image) You can clearly see a step run right through. That to me would suggest it isn't a vise job. Yes the areas in question are symmetrical as in a vise. The "steps" still being visible make me ponder!
I also think it looks like a vise job, but wonder how a vise did that without changing the rim! Weird!!!
Also there appears to be no evidence of obverse vice. Now that can be easily attributed to a block of wood/rubber installed to keep such impression. But this is a vice job coin I have and is very noticeable.
Just wondering about the post by @2manyhobbies stating the steps can still be seen because the top of the "C" can still be seen also.
The C in CENT is damaged as stated but it looks as it was part of the vise that damaged it. This was not caused by or at the Mint. Yes, it's damaged.
The steps still can be seen. Very odd to me how the steps that can take a small hit in circulation and be almost wiped out completely but were able to survive being smashed in a vise or the like.
There was pressure added post mint.. but it didn't eliminate the design. Have you ever seen how a design can still be seen on a Elongated Cent on the back? From my collection Front Back
