Checking out at the grocery store today I noticed a pile of shinny halfs in the drawer. The cashier had handed me $2 as my change so I asked if I could have some halfs. When I got them home I was checking them out and noticed a "scratch" so I thought. checked all 4 coins and they all had the same line in the exact same spot. The crack runs from the coins edge to the point of JFK's neck and a little beyond the back of his neck. This would be my first die crack find (if thats what I have). Is this a known or common spot for a crack? Any thoughts?
Hard to say for sure without a close-up - but you can tell for yourself. If the line is raised - it is a die-crack. If it is incuse - it is a scratch. I would also look at the tip of the L - kinda looks like there may be one there as well. Whether it is a known variety or not I can't say. But circulation coins with die-cracks are certainly not rare. They are quite common in fact. The new nickels that were just released are said to be plagued with them.
Good morning sir, Actually I'm not amazing, but I am amazed at what you can do with a search engine and a couple of key words. Being a kid that grew up watching a black&white, all tube type television, and having to solve math problems on a piece of scratch paper, I think computers and the internet are truly amazing.
Here's a closer look. The crack runs along the raised line of the bust and there is some raised or extra material just past the designer initials.
Speak of the Devil.....here it is on eBay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3906263912&category=524
Hate to spoil an auction/dream I'm not sure if the Mint would admit it, but that seems to be "World most plentiful" in the crack department. I'm the proud owner of about 5 rolls of the very same cracked Kennedy. I thought the first few were special, then it was roll after roll.
By the way Jody526, What's your webhost trying to download when we bring up your picture? My machine blocks it but others might not.
. In fact, I included 5 of them in a recent auction as common clad halves and didn't add a penny for them.
captbly2k, The link is to an auction at "ioffer.com". The picture is a close-up of the same die cracked 1996 Kennedy half, that Dockwalliper has.
Mind if I ask how you are managing to sell common, clad Kennedy's in an auction? I mean, clearly it must be at above FV and I cannot for the "life of me" come up with a reason why anyone would buy them. I am not trying to be offensive towards you.... I just do not "get" it, that's all. I do not even bother keeping the 1982-91 P&Ds... well, I have kept a few that are at least a 60, but still. Tell me your secrets captbly2k!
SJVM: I think that you will have a long wait for an answer. captbly2k has not posted since april, 2004. as old as this thread.
