As for me personally, I doubt that I could narrow down a single favorite. Regardless, if I had to choose a handful of favorites I'd include these examples along with a few honorable mentions. However, if I had a gun to my head, I'd probably choose Pistrucci, as one of the first major world coin acquisitions I ever made was the 1896 Crown that I've attached below. The rest of the coins are stock images from the Internet. Adolph A. Weinman: George William De Saulles: Pistrucci: Augustus St Gaudens: Honorable Mentions: Domenico Trentacoste: Hermon A. MacNeil: Percy Metcalfe:
@scottishmoney, the middle one is truly a work of art. Years ago I thought the miniaturist painters were really something...and they are...but some of the coins and medals in this thread are really incredible. Thanks to everyone for sharing these. Steve
@petronius we really should have excluded the Italians and their designers, ancient and modern until we sorted everything else out. Those early 20th century designs just blow everyone else out of the water. That said,
@ZoidMeister. When I look at that top photo I feel like I'm actually standing inside of it. Amazing 3D look.
Been a while since I've been to this thread, but I;ve been gaining a new appreciation for an Italian engraver named Louis-Oscar Roty. His body of work seems to be limited, but I like what I see . . . . . . . Z
never heard of him before.... JK! he truly is brilliant, in fact, better than Weinman, because Weinman's Walking Liberty design was apparently inspired by La Semeuse!
I'm interested in seeing some ancients here- we don't need to know who but if we can see some truly elaborate ancients coins here I'd be happy love me roman portraiture
One of my favorites, Reinhart Heinsdorff, a German sculptor and painter, responsible for many German and European commemorative pieces, This one celebrates the 30 anniversary of the Rome Treaty. Note the 30 Years has been stylised into a chariot
Of course it does, rather metals and medals are my thing. Keep sharing my friends!! Excited for some 'fine style' ancients!
If also banknotes are accepted, Italians do it better, again Trento Cionini and his iconic portrait of Gandhi on Indian rupees. petronius
@Evan Saltis. Have you ever looked at what Weinman designed other than coins? Here's a few of his works Much more can be found on this site (plus other sites): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adolph_Alexander_Weinman
