I got this coin in a lot with some other coins I got. I am still not able to figure out what coin this is. Any ideas? Looks Roman to me... I tried, I just couldn't make the picture aesthetically pleasing. Have to figure out how to take nice pictures of coins.
It's a small copper coin from one of Constantine's relatives. Hard to identify further due to the dark image.
Its a bronze coin of the Valentinian dynasty, probably of Valentinian I, SECVRITAS REI PVBLICA reverse. Can you tell me the letters on the bottom of the reverse? Or maybe get a picture with more oblique lighting?
More Clear I have to figure out the best way of taking pictures of coins !!! Here is a more clear picture I think the text reads Syambiras Ovahs
Much clearer picture, great! Gratian AE3, 367-375 AD Obv legend: DN GRATIA-NVS PF AVG Rev legend: SECVRITAS-REIPVBLIC Rev design: Victory advancing left Mintmark: RQVARTA (Rome mint, fourth officina) Reference: RIC IX Rome 24c
It was fairly simple once I could see the mintmark. Its much longer than the usual ones, which are more often something like SMAL or CONSA. After that I just used the spreadsheets here ( http://www.catbikes.ch/coinstuff/coins-ric.htm ) to find similar mintmarks, of which RQVARTA was the only close match. Since there was only one issue of RQVARTA AE3's, this had to belong to it.
