How hard is it to find a toned unc 1893 Morgan?

I am thinking of building a toned 1893 mint set centered around my barber quarter of same date. As I look at mintages for the 1893 dollar, the philly version only has 378,000!

What do the Morgan collectors say about how tought this date is to collect? I've already reviewed what Coinfacts has to say.

What should I expect to pay? Greysheet indicates around $900 for a 63 philly, but I would imagine that toning will drive it higher.

Thanks in advance for any comments.

Well doesn't toning, drive any coin higher?
The 1893 is expensive, as is the 1893 S, 1893 O and 1893 CC, OH BOY!

These are expensive, and I'm going to say this... Buy them now, because in 3 years, you'll look back ,and the price you paid, would be monumental!

Tough year Catbert and considering how many collectors want that "blast white" coin it may be pretty difficult.
Wonder how many "toned" examples have taken a nice dip?

    Just a thought.

Wouldn't surprise me if all toned explains were dipped! lol

Blast white, might be the way to go...

    Cat,

I have good news and bad news for you. The more valuable the coin, the less of a premium you will pay for the toning. A $50 coin with fantastic toning will run you many multiples of wholesale price. A $1,000 coin with fantastic toning will be lucky to reach 2X wholesale (usually). That is the good news.

The bad news is that Morgan Dollars with low mintages did not sit around in bank vaults in canvas bags like their common date counterparts. Therefore, finding an 1893 bag toned Morgan will be virtually impossible. It should not be too difficult to locate an album toned example with peripheral toning of either russet or violet, but a fully toned example will be very elusive.

I don't know how much you are willing to spend on this coin or what kind of toning requirements you are looking for, but I will tell you in my brief search through Heritage's archives, this coin might be the best you will find for quite some time in either MS63 or MS64.

The good news about this coin is that it is available right now and has very attractive toning as long as you don't hate fingerprints. But alas, where there is good news, there is bad.

This coin sold in last June (2008) Summer Fun sale for $1,610 in an NGC MS63 holder. It was crossed to PCGS as an MS64. Now you have to decide for yourself, is it an MS63 or and MS64. I will almost guarantee the reserve price is $1,900. Personally, I have no problem with this coin as an MS64. It is cleaner than every MS63 Morgan I own for sure.

    What???

    An NGC 63 crossed into a PCGS 64 ????

Say it isn't so, that contradicts everything we know about the top 2 TPG's, koolaide aside;)

    I love it !!

Thanks to all for your replies! Always great to have such informed people to turn to for info.

Lehigh - that first link for the Balt. auction Morgan is quite attractive to me. Unfortunately, I must accept that my desires outrun my resources.

This must be a long term goal and I'm sure it will cost me more by waiting. I'll focus shorter term on the lowly dime and penny where they are more reasonably in my grasp.

If you are patient they come up for reasonable ( somewhat ) prices.
A PCGS MS63 went on Ebay for a little over $900 which I thought was a steal for the coin. Keep your eyes open and cash available when they pop up
