Welcome to the forum. And remember we were all newbies. You can get a better coin than that. If a peace or morgan looks scratchy like that or too shiny its probably been cleaned. If you want , you can buy a few cleaned coins cheap. And scratched also. Then go to a local coin shop and compare yours to thiers a free and easy way to learn.
Peace Dollar Thanks for the message guys . I have another query http://cgi.ebay.ca/1921-Peace-Silver-Dollar-VSharp-KEY-DATE-Coin-4431_W0QQitemZ310130571990QQ ---- What grading can we give to this coin ...is it MS-60 above ? Moon , thanks for your views. I mainly collect Commemorative coins and rare coins . I use the red book as guide . I believe mostly in Silver collectibles right now and rare coins . Thanks
Nope..Not a 60, but a nice looking coin... I'm becoming very skeptic of raw peace dollars and morgans though The scratches I see might be from cleaning. What say y'all, is it uncleaned
Why are you skeptic ? Do you suspect coins to be fake ? There are so many good looking peace dollars going out at 150+ USD and most of them are unslabbed . The slabbed ones go for double ...
I have a question about cleaning , what happens when a coin is cleaned ? How does the value dimnish if the piece retains its fineness ? Besides how can one really understand if a coin is cleaned or not !Lots of enlightening posts here , I think I'd be doubl careful on ebay .
Yes, I'm skeptic, and it is the reason I ONLY buy graded. (excluding barber quarters and liberty nickels and wheat cents)
You can tell when a coin is cleaned most of the time... Cleaning, polishing, whizzing, whatever you do, it will RUIN the coins value. It will knock it off a couple dollars, to a couple hundred dollars. Once you get the hang of it, you'll be able to tell, like that! Be very careful on ebay, that is where i buy all my coins, and I'm careful... Because I don't buy raw morgans, a lot are cleaned
I can certainly relate to what you're saying here. I recently spent a couple of weeks watching 1921 Peace Dollars on ebay, keeping many of them on my watchlist, and occasionally bidding. I wouldn't have been able to afford a slabbed 1921 Peace. When the right one came along, it was a Buy It Now and by then I had been watching long enough to know a bargain when I saw it. By the way, the one in your link looks nice but I would hesitate to spend any more than the opening bid on that one...and the experts here say it's been cleaned. If you're patient you can probably do even better!
http://cgi.ebay.ca/1921-Peace-Dollar-CHOICE-XF_W0QQitemZ290303917886QQ How about this ? greatsoutherncoin is a reputed seller , some of his coins sell for more than 1 grand .... I am learning how to spot a cleaned and original coin . Does cleaning with water to remove the dust particle consitute as "Cleaning" ?
On the first one the lines are circular which means it was wizzed buff which put's it at junk! But even in VG it goes for $150. Their shipping charge of $25 is ridiculous. I thought that e-bay had a thing about over charging on shipping. I disagree about buying slab only. But that's due to having them send coins back in body bags that are no where close to what was sent to them. Most of the grading companies won't grade wizzed buffed coins because they are considered "altered". As for the 2nd one is a way better coin. I'd say Extremely Fine. Choice may be pushing it. I'm not an expert grader either. The bid is so low right now & although I still think $11 is high for shipping they did state free shipping till the 1st of April. That dealer sounds familiar but if it was because of something bad I think I'd remember.
NO! GREATSOUTHERNCOIN is a terrible seller! NEVER NEVER NEVER! HE DOCTORS ALL HIS PHOTOS! Don't get scammed. If you bid, retract it!
He'll make a VF look MS60...He has done it, and he is best with SLQ's. He can create more luster (snap) like that!
On March 11, 2006, I bought a Shield Nickel from Great Southern coin. It is a nice coin except that it has a small checkmark scratch. The owner there stated that the coin had no such scratch when it was photographed. They had photographed the coin with that part of the coin in an area of glare, where no details would show. They are a bit slick, imho. Later, he said he did see the scratch in some of their other photos, after I brought it up and sent photos to him. Also, $11.00 for shipping is over the top as far as I'm concerned. I paid only $5,.00 shipping, still very high. Knowing ebay fairly well, I know that just the shipping charge will eliminate most ebay buers from considering a purchase with such exhorbitant shipping costs added. And the higher shipping, which would be forfeited if an item was returned, probably keeps some buyers from returning coins. At first he said no refund or return, but then recanted and offered me a refund. Though I still like my coin, I will not do business with this company again. If my experience is typical, and I am not saying that it is, a lot of buyers have very expensive coins that have some problems not shown in photos or item descriptions. If you watch their listings you will see that they never seem to mention any fault of their coins. While the grades may be accurate from a wear standpoint, I'll bet most have some similar problem that limits their value to much less than you will have to spend to buy them. I kept the coin because it is such a nice example, even with a scratch, which is slight.
Well, most people who buy from them, look at the coin, and think it is too good to be true! No contact marks on an MS64.... NOW HOW WOULD IT BE A 64 THEN? greatsoutherncoin, is a scammer, and I hope no one on this forum does business with them
