Hi, I have a 1989 D penny and the D is actually falling off. Is this a flaw, is it worth anything? Does anyone know? Thanks, C
this is really not all that uncommon on the zincolns. I would need photos to verify but I believe that this is due to zinc rot. It is very common for the zincolns to get a plating split around the mintmark. once exposed to the enviroment the zinc starts to rot and eventually the coin starts to fall apart. Please post a picture for confirmation. Thanks Richard
Reply I have put a picture in my album for your to view. I have also put a regular 1989 D penny next to it so you can see the difference. I tried to clean it the best I could so that you can see it better. The best way to see it is in person but that is hard. I hope this helps. Thanks...
It doesn't look like it is falling. It looks more like an error with the striking of the coin A lot of lincolns are like this.
I looked at your photo and could not see anything unusual. You should not clean your coins. Cleaning can damage a coin. If a coin is valuable you can greatly reduce its value by cleaning it.
