But way my eyes are i Ihope it is. I had my wife and daughter look at this coin and they said looks likes the 1970 is even on top, and what I have read it could be a small date,

Large date, the tail of the 7 extends too far below the bottom of the 0.

Thank You all, was hoping had a good find, what threw me off was the 7 and 0 looks as best my eyes can tell looks even across, i see now that the 7 tail does go below the 0. It's great to have a cool place like this to ask questions on coins.well back to my search for that one coin that i can brag about.

With a little experience, you'll be able to spot the small dates (including the 60's) quickly. To me, they stand out immediately when I see them.

I have a problem with these too. The more time I spend looking at them, the more my eyes play tricks on me. The 1960 large and small dates are much easier to tell apart.

Yeah, whenever I try to tell them apart I always have to go back to comparative photos to be sure. If I looked at enough of them it might become easier to differentiate the large from the smalls.

I need to have examples of both on hand to tell the difference between the two.

I can never tell on these, unless I have a picture of what one looks like right in front of me!

    Glad others can help!

Good pictures, but sorry it is not a small date. Good luck searching!

I used to struggle with these too until I stopped looking at pictures and explanations. Two things make it REAL easy:

    1) The 6 on the 60's small date looks completely different than the large. Don't look at anything else in the date. The upper part of the 6 is MUCH,MUCH shorter on the small versus the large.

    2) On the 70's small, focus on the BOTTOM of the 7, it's almost even with the bottom of the 0 and on the large is WAY longer. Drawing a "mental" line across the top of the whole date is very difficult....I really hate when they say to look at that.

I whipped up my own image, just look how much longer the bottom of the 7 is here.
