There are a lot of copper-plated zinc cents there. I suspect that they will start to rot at some point.

That is gonna be a mess.....let alone the possibility that once the coins begin to rot that he/she will absorb heavy metals through the soles of his feet.

He shoulda tried a small part of a wall first:)

The have clear acrylic plastic which can cover the floor. This would almost eliminate corrosion and also the "cold" feel in the morning she complains about.

Would be a idea if he put a coat of sealent over them if for no other reason than to make cleaning the floor easier after all they are cemented in so it is not realy going to damage the coins LOL

No it wont. If it is an apllied acrylic coating because the expansion and contraction of the metal coins due to variances in temps will eventually cause minute cracks in the acrylic which will then allow humidity to seep in. If it is a sheet of acrylic, walking on it will form minute cracks in it.

This is my main reason for posting here....I have found quite a few odd or error coins in my grandfather's collection. It is taking me some time to go through and research but today I found such an odd penny. It is a Linclon cent with the memorial on the back and appears to be silver but I can see what I believe to be copper showing through. What is the opinion of this forum???
It passes the ring test and does not stick to a magnet.
I will attach photos in the next posting

Since the rims have copper peeking out, the coin is easy to identify as one that has been coated or thinly plated by something.

It does not have that usual plated look so whatever was done added a layer only molecules thick.

Why would anyone plate a penny with silver?

You can't tell if it is silver but to answer the question. It is sometimes done as a science experiment in schools. In fact, CoinWorld recently ran an article that tells you how to do a silver plating using common household items.

Also, many "special" hyped, silver , gold, and platinum plated coins are sold on TV all the time. Thats been going on for a long time.

In any case, i don't think your coin is coated with silver. It is likely a thin layer of spray paint:) I've seen coins sprayed with silver spray and gold spray that are only barely covered just like yours.

The motivation behind why someone would tamper with a coin is often difficult to pin down. The fact that it is done is easy to discern.

    Thanks,
    Bill

Silly people...it's confusing enough for newbies without someone out there spray painting coins or chemically altering them. Under the magnifying glass this is not spray paint but must be plated in some way. One of many strange coins that I have, so many uniquely colored pennies. My grandfather must have loved oddities. Thank you for your reply,

I've seen it a few times, even did it once with limited success in chem class in high school, electroplating.

This is cool, and I guess cheaper than the million-dollar bar at Jackson, Wyoming that's surfaced in Silver dollars!!! Thanks - great image!!!

I know a collector that has one of those acrylic toilet seats with the coins embedded in it, with a Morgan dollar in the centre.

Crikeys, I would want a Saint or a Mexican 50 Pesos in mine.

My favorite bars were the ones where a silver dollar was welded to the shaft of a nail. The nail was gently tapped into a pre-drilled hole in the bar. Try as they might, customers could never pick up the 'dollar someone left here.' LOL
