Morgan Question

I got this from a friend who owed me money. Are these the ones that they sell on tv late at night for for 20 bucks? pictures are in the 4th post in the thread i resubmitted them thanks

I cant see much from the scans. What is the date, and on the back under the eagle, and above where it says Dollars are there any letters (mintmark).

 

ill scan again i'm a noob to this as you probably can tell but, the date is 1886 and there is no mint mark.

 

alright hear is my 2nd attempt at this: It is in a black cardboard sleeve with silver lettering that says United States of America genuine us mint coinage

 

I haven't seen a morgan in that specific holder before, Im not sure where it came from. Are you trying to figure out how much its worth?

 

I valued it at 20 bucks for my friend, because thats what the late nite tv people sell them for but a true value would be nice. I guess im more concerd about the condition, and weathr or not it would be worth sending of to get slabed

 

From the scans I couldn't guess the grade, pics would be better. But the 1886 is a pretty common coin even in MS 64 its only worth around $55. So IMO it wouldn't be worth the grading fees unless it was a 65 or higher.

 

it is not greater than a 61 or 62.... but IMO, it is AU

 

Thanks Y'all. I'll hold on to it and maybe with all the inflation that is on the horzion people will start melting coins again and the value will go up thanks again

It is illegal to TAMPER with any U.S currency:

Section 331 of Title 18 of the United States code provides criminal penalties for anyone who fraudulently alters, defaces, mutilates impairs, diminishes, falsifies, scales, or lightens any of the coins coined at the Mints of the United States. This statute means that you may be violating the law if you change the appearance of the coin and fraudulently represent it to be other than the altered coin that it is. As a matter of policy, the Mint does not promote coloring, plating or altering U.S. coinage: however, there are no sanctions against such activity absent fraudulent intent. Techniqually melting the coins isnt included in this statute, in 2006 they passed the law making it illegal to melt the cent and nickels.

 

The key word is fraudulently.

 

so, you are saying I can melt washington's first spouse proofs.
