If that indeed lives up to its billing as "Superb Gem" and makes the cut to 65 and beyond those bidders are just getting warmed up. Right now, with just under 2 hours to go, it's barely being bid half as high as a 64.
For some reason, 1915-S's have skyrocketed lately. The last couple 64RB's Heritage has sold went for $3105, $3220, and $3220. My guess is that one goes somewhere between a 63 and a 64.
I think I've heard of that seller, think they may have a website. Why is it ebay canada? Is it a reputable seller? Why didn't the seller have the coin slabbed? If it was slabbed it would sell for more.
i was thinking the same thing...I am inclined to believe all pricey coins like that ned to be slabbed..
Well, well....IMO, somebody is going to over-pay for that coin. Indeed it is well struck, but the dies were sharpened in 1915 and some detail was added to the beard. The coins does appear to be an EDS example and the fields look pretty clean...but lighting makes the world of difference and there's a lot of over-exposure in these pics. GSC pictures ALWAYS make the coin look better than it really is with untrue color representation and tricky lighting. They make even the crappiest coin look like it's something special. Give me a WHITE background with proper white balance calibration! I'm guessing the bidders know what they are doing and will not hesitate to use the return policy if the coin does not meet their expectations. Hard to tell from crappy 400x400 pictures, but there looks to be a couple deep hits to the cheek. I believe GSC is rubbing their hands together in joy right now as they likely paid MS63 money or less for this coin....about $245. The CDN price jump from 63 to 64 ($1250 ask) is a HUGE gap and a risk I'd not be willing to take unless the coin was slabbed or I could see it in hand.
I'm always VERY suspecious when I see a fairly rare coin of apparent gem grade unslabbed. There's usually a reason and more often and than not it's not because it was grandpa's coin stashed away for 90 years.
If you can find me a MS63 15-S for $250 (certified, of course), I will gladly take if off you hands. I have been watching those coins in brown go for $500. Seriously, PM me if you know where I can get one.
Yes!!! in auctions most people state it was an inherited coin, stashed away. Like you said Its all in the pic. With todays photo editing software its easy to hide flaws. Not to mention the fact that one could take multiple pictures of a coin and choose the best one.
I'm simply quoting the CDN values which is what I use to bargain at coin shows and all the dealers abide by it. I'll certainly investigate 15-S's at the next show, but I generally only look at raw coins...best way to find a dealer under-graded bargain.
Sorry, I was off on the price. They were $600+ http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEDWX:IT&item=170309289316 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEDWX:IT&item=190286679614
That's above even the PCGS price guide, MS63 BN $550.....typical for ebay. I see lots of green arrows for the 1915-S's, not sure why they are moving up lately either.
Here is another one http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1126&Lot_No=7462&type=bidnotice-dailystatus - and it still has 10 days left on the bidding. This one is 63 RB and the PCGS site lists it for $650, but it is already $850 and probably still climbing.
