I have just received my first double headed nickle. It has 1986P on one
side, and 1996P on the other. Is this a real coin? Or is it a fake?

Sorry they cant be made like that.

It is a "fake" or magicians coin.

Look for a seam either on the edge or around the rim of one side.

If you drop it on a table with another nickel you will hear a differance in the sound too . It wont ring like a real nickel.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi,

It is , as mentioned...A magician's coin, as they are called.

Dies are defaced after use, so 1986 dies would have been intentionally damaged by the mint in late 1986 or early 1987. For that reason alone, (There are many others) it is impossible for a 1986 and a 1996 die to be paired up in a coining press.

    Thanks,
    Bill

I agree with the others about it being a magicians coin. I also have a double headed nickle with 1995 D and with 1999 D on the other side. I can see on the one side it appears as if it has a double rim. This is what caught my eye to begin with. But it is still pretty cool to have!

magicians coin indeed, although yesterday I saw a wheatie reamed out from the head side with a mercury dime inserted into it. A nice fantasy piece.
