Got my first gold coin today. It is an 1880 5$ gold piece in au, but I think it looks au58. Its not graded its raw. I want to post a pic but am having trouble doing so. I have the picture do i just paste it on?

gongrats! Looks nice, personally i would rather have a high grade AU than a low grade MS... usually low grade MS coins ( especially gold ) are riddled with contact marks.
Yeah and besides a ms piece even in lower grades is about one hundred more dollars than this one was(160$).
That's very nice. I just picked up my first one a couple of weeks ago, an 1882 half-eagle, probably about an EF-40 http://homepage.mac.com/ebangeman/ars/halfeagle-rev.jpg
Looks great...not cleaned or anything... I could see that coin going MS60...because of the back...it looks great. Speedy
Yeah he had six at the coin store and that was the best one. The back does have a lot of mint luster do you think I should submit it ti PCGS?
Golden Pennies, Nice coin! I like the eighteen-hundreds half eagles. I recently purchased my first old gold coin as well. I got an 1880 S $5 half eagle certified AU58 by NGC. I really am happy with it. I agree with what some of the others have said about the low MS grade coins. I too have noticed that much of the MS60 and 61 stuff has lots of contact marks. From my rather new experience at looking around at coins, it seems that you really have to get up to MS63 or so to reduce the contact marks enough for my taste, and then, I can't afford them... I'd much rather have an AU58 that's just barely worn and has very few contact marks...that's how the one is that I bought. Along with what seems to me to often be better eye appeal, the AU stuff is cheaper, so in my opinion, if you like it, you can't go wrong. Nice choice. I also like that you have it in an AirTite holder...my personal choice for uncertified, valuable coins. Glad you joined the Gold ranks!
Nothing like the fresh smell of gold in the morning!!! I don't care what the grade is gold is a treat to hold and a sight to see! Also kicks up the value of a collection very quickly! One other point, Golden Pennies, it can be very habit forming!!!
Well I don't know about that. Although I was thinking about getting an example for each value like a 2.50$ a 10$ and a 20$.
I agree with crystalk64! I got the half eagle. Now I want to get one each of the $1, $2.5, $10 and $20 all with the Liberty Head design to go with it!
