Please post some of these types of notes and how to tell the difference between a regular note and the special one. Please post comparison pics if you have them. Also, what to look for and what years. Thanks

wow - this is one hack of a loaded post

here is a wiki note showing the face of a web note and regular note, and here is the reverse. Notice the only difference are the plate number locations ... each is circled in what to look for.

A mule is tougher to locate... here is a little history about them

A 'Mule' notes is simply a note that has a micro size check number on one side and a macro size check number on the other. Mico numbers measure .06mm high, and macro check numbers measure 1.0mm high.

Mules came about with the adoption of macro plate check numbers begining in January 1938. Mules flowed fromthe Bureau of Engraving and Printing for the next 15 years. They ceased in 1953 when the last of the 12-subject $50 and $100 Federal Reserve micro back plates were finally retired with the phasing out of the 12-subject plates.

The change of the check plate number fromthe micro to the macro was of sufficiant importance to the BEP that they advanced the series designations on the new macro face plates by one letter. Fo example, the $5 silver certificates went from 1934 to 1934A, despite the fact that the treasury signatures remained Julian-Morganthau. The difference was entirely in the size of the plate check numbers.

changeover pairs are a bit odder yet ...

Changeover Pair
When a letter is appended to a series year, probably in response to a change in the signatures, the serial numbering is not reset to A00000001A, but is instead continued from the previous note. Thus, we may see a Series 1928 $1 Silver Certificate, serial number H15982026A followed by a Series 1928A $1 Silver Certificate, serial number H15982027A. This is a "changeover pair," in that it represents the change in the series of the note. It may surprise the non-collector that there can actually be many such changeover pairs for a given pair of series, as the assignment of serial numbers hasn't always been absolutely sequential, and because some older plates were known to have been used, even when a newer series was current. For this reason, there are also "reverse changeover pairs," in which the higher serial numbered note is of an older series than the note it "follows."

Thank you all for your help. I'm kinda having a hard time wrapping me head around the errors and the books are getting confusing. I guess I'm more of a visual person.
