Us Canadians use them. No complaints here.

 

I'd support having a practically circulating $1 coin in circulation... just makes sense, would save us millions since it's much more durable than a paper dollar. But it will never practically circulate unless we actually get rid of the paper $1 bill.

$2 coin? No... it's not a practical denomination in paper, why would it be any more so in coin?

In a country that routinely uses the $2 denomination in paper, it would make sense to switch to a coin of that denomination. Worked in Australia and Canada, for example. But the $2 bill hasn't been a practical denomination in paper in the US for more than 30 years now... just wouldn't make sense to make a coin of that denomination either.

Why not just use 2 $1 coins instead?

 

$2 coin is a great idea. Will it circulate...of course not. We can't even get the most widely used denomination in US money to circulate in coin form...the dollar! It'll be just another palat for a fifty year commemorative run like the dollar coins.

We already have a practical circulating $1 coin. You simply have to demand it! If the bank tries to give you $1 bills, hand them back and tell them straight out, "I don't want dirty money, I'll take coins please". Same at the market. If they hand you dollar bills tell them you don't like dirty money, ask if they have dollar coins instead. Use the phrase "dirty money" as much as possible, and you'll start to see a difference in people's reactions toward the dollar coin.

What do you mean it is not practical? Practicality and use are two different things. Just because something is not in use in no way implies that it is not practical. The $2 denomination is quite practical for the normal everyday small purchases that we make. One or two $2 bills may be used for any purchase between $1.01 and $4 quite practically. And why use two $1 coins when you can simply use one $2 coin? Which is easier to use, two or four coins? If the purchase is $4, it's much easier to handle two coins rather than four. And why stop there? One coin is best...just hand them a $5 coin!

There is really no reason that I can see that we do not have a circulating coin for every denomination in use today. I would much rather be able to count my $19 in change by simply opening my hand, scanning the coins returned, and pocketing it. Much easier and faster than messing with dirty money, trying to unwrinkle and unfold the paper to fit into my wallet while some guy on a cell phone is pushing me out of line before the cash drawer has even closed.

 

If coin money will ever work then we need $1, $2, $5, 10, $20, $50, and $100 face value coins. Just my opinion.

 

I will start thinking of a good design for a two dollar coin when A) the feds stop printing $1 bills and 2) the $1 coin actually starts circulating. It would save them money and they still can't see the light. 1 and 5 cent coins cost more to produce and they only discuss the issue. If they solve one of these issues in the next decade, I'd be shocked. So, I as a collector would collect a $2 coin, but is it practical enough to circulate? Yes. Will it? Without a doubt, no.

 

Exactly. Just like I said in another thread, the change is very rarely coming from the people. The people will use the bill for as long as it exists. Besides the waste of money that it is, it's just too inconvenient to have a ote with such a small denomination. In no time, the pocket is bursting with $1 bills.

Like someone else already said, being practical and being used are two very different things. I'd find a 2$ bill or coin very practical. The only reason why I don't use it is because I never see one.

It will circulate as much as the authorities want it to circulate. That is true for every denomination, pretty much everywhere. All those countries that joined the euro recently. Do you REALLY think anyone would have stopped using the former currency if the decision was made to leave the two currencies co-exist forever? Of course not. Here it'd be even simpler, because you wouldn't be changing currency. A couple of months is all it'd take to remove the bills and introduce the coins.

If nothing else, you will see I'm right when you have to use 6 or 7 $1 to buy a candy bar and people realize it's starting to become unreasonable.

 

I think it would phenomenally stupid and a gigantic waste of money. Get the $1 coin widely used and then we can talk about a $2 coin.

 

@ quartertapper I think a BiMetalic coin would be good idea for $2,for the first time in US coinage Bimetalic coins are in circulation.

I served 5 years in Germany 88-93 with the Marks... 1, 5, 10, 50 Phening cois with 1, 2, & 5 mark coins... 5, 10, 20, 50 & 100 Mark bills... That system worked great! Always had a pocket of change after bar hopping on a Friday night!!! :goofer:

 

The one dollar coin will never circulate properly until the one dollar bill is removed. But that will not happen because Crane Paper, just up the road from me has Senator Kennedy in their pocket. Yes, a two dollar coin would be great. it worked in canada because they were smart enough to take out the one dollar bill. The same goes for the cent.it takes over 70% of the mints production capacity and only benefits the zinc and copper industry. As taxpayers we bear the brunt of this foolishness. I'm not a oponent of the cent per say as I collect them as well, but it is a losing proposition.

 

It would be interesting to know whether it is viable for the economy to just get rid of the cent.

In Finland, they got rid of the 1 and 2 cent coins soon after the euro started circulating. Italy tried to do the same but realized it would not be feasible.

 

The US dollar will continue to fall as long as the US Govt. continues to print money at will. Though Europe and other countries have accepeted dollar coins, the US will not. 2$ bills have not been accepted and I can't see a $2 coin.

 

yes. two and five dollars coin. or even the ten dollars coin. many other nations already have it. now its time for u.s. to issue it. our money is inflated and devalued.

Id like to see a 5,10 and 50 dollar coin as well...
