Ok so maybe this isn't the most amazing grade or year, but I am still exited that it came in the mail today, and wanted to share!

I could be wrong though, wait for what others have to say. But I believe there are some scratches that would relate to cleaning, and all that dirt that is stuck in the denticles on the reverse.

No man, I'll bet you are spot on. You know your Morgans, and I have heaps to learn. I am thinking of listing all of my questionable coins on Ebay and going strictly with slabs so I don't get burned.

If any of you are bored, I scanned them all in, was going to make a web page with each image.

I don't have anything really rare, except 1880 through 1885 CC's all in MS62 or better condition.

I am sure I paid a bit too much for most of them as well, I am going with dealers from now on.

I'll take a look at those coins, still raining here so I have nothing to do. Looks like your interested in morgans I would definitely suggest buying- A Guide to Morgan Silver Dollars by David Bowers (3rd edition is the newest), and I also like The Morgan and Peace Dollar Textbook by Wayne Miller (It's a little old but it's got a lot of great info).

I actually tend to think it is not cleaned. The luster looks fine to me.

I can't tell if it's been cleaned or not, but it's still a nice looking coin. Great detail. Besides, really, not too many Morgans haven't been cleaned ot one time or another. I've been collecting them for 25 years now and to the best of my knowledge, there is no such thing as a complete Morgan set with all uncleaned examples. It wouldn't be very possible in my opinion.

Nice coin I didn't think that it had been cleaned until I saw the reverse. I'm a little worried about the black in the denticles, but the surfaces look good and I don;t see breaks in the luster. Maybe it hasn't been cleaned, but by some odd way that black dirt/crud got into the denticles on the reverse. Tough one for me, but I am starting to lean to not cleaned.

I don't think it has been cleaned. If so, not abusively. Very hard to tell without having it in hand to watch as the cartwheel effect goes across the surfaces. Can you tell if the darkened area in the denticles is "dirt" or toning? If toning, maybe a quick dip didn't get into that space.

Not cleaned. Great coin. Low MS. You did fine in my opinion. Looked through some of your scanned coins and they all look fine, the ones I saw. I mostly only buy graded coins lately and AU/EF raw coins for albums. I am basically having one set of graded and one set for albums which is fun. People say Morgans are overrated and they dropped in price a lot between the 80's to the 1990's (I am not talking about specific years of coins). Seems the price rose after the 1990's if I recall, but some people still consider them like glorified bullion. I like them because they are so big (ever hold a raw one in your hand?- feels awesome). I feel weird when I spend a lot of money on an IHC or Lincoln- it is such a small item. Sort of a strange concept. Sorry to go off topic but I just noticed you seem to like Morgans so I thought I'd throw this in for fun.

eh - I still say not cleaned. i can't explain the dirt in dentrites though but that surface is too nice to be considered clean.

I thought it was cleaned because of the all the dirt stuck in the denticles on the rev, its also still stuck in the UST in "In God We Trust", the E in "ONE", and right next to the eagles left leg, also on the tips of the arrows. IMO these are signs of cleaning, I don't know how else that could happen. It is still a very nice coin, but IMHO I think its been cleaned. Put it like this if this coin was sent to NGC or PCGS, do you think it would recieve a grade, or get body bagged?

Well... actually I bought that two weeks ago, before I found this great forum. Since then I have been a LOT more skeptical about Ebay auctions and not bought a thing. I never even knew about "dipping" before.

Like I said, next time it will be a dealer or a slabbed coin I got a deal on. Sometimes you can actually get a deal on Ebay. Usually you have to stay up till 3 AM on a weeknight, but that's not so bad for us night owls.

I'd be shocked if it got body bagged. Its a fine specimen to my eyes.

Could you explain what "body bagged" means? Do they actually tell you "No, we can't grade this coin!!" ??

Yes there are many reasons they wouldn't grade a coin (harsh cleaning, damage, questionable toning, ect...). Coins used to get bagged but, I believe as of December 1st PCGS will put the coin in a "Genuine" holder, instead of a bodybag.
