Found in the UK. I think the hammered is a Henry IV penny but I cant be sure. And I think the first Roman is a Gloria Romanorum Valentinian I - want to be sure.
@Will Parsons, Welcome! I'm not one of the numerous, fiercely erudite Late Roman Bronze guys here. And Please, Please don't take my word for it about the hammered. But is that a quatrefoil on the reverse? I'm Really Wanting yours to be Durham, Spink 1722. You're obviously dead on about the distinctive 'big hair' of the Henry IV portraits. And that round face just helps it along. ...We haven't corresponded in years --since I bought all of his culls that I wanted-- but I know of a British collector who is one of the world's three or so top mavens about Henry IV. Honest, he Should be published. I could see about pestering him....
Thank you!!! And yes it is a quatrefoil - difficult to see. I've looked at different faces and it's really hard to tell but Henry IV seemed the closest. Any help is very much appreciated!!
Given the gravity of the question, I'm seriously talking myself into writing the guy in the UK. ...I quit writing him more because of his schedule than anything. This would make for a good reintroduction.
@Will Parsons, I'm really sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Alastair Wardle, numismatist extraordinaire, did write back. His verdict is that the penny is likely to be Edward IV, possibly Irish. He attached several supporting .jpgs, but unfortunately as compressed, zip files, which this machine doesn't have the software to uncompress. ...Honest, please receive my sincere apologies for getting your hopes up.
That's no worries at all mate - still a good piece of history I'm glad you got to speak with and mate too
Thanks for that! And you're spot on --it was an unalloyed joy to reconnect. He had lots of news, just in the first email! He and his are Fine; living in his parents' house in East Anglia, with a total, between them, of three dogs. ...Honest, many, many thanks for prodding me to write --with the result that you foresaw before I got that far! ...And, Yes, you nailed it again; Edward IV, maybe Irish, is cool in its own right.
Too funny. I just watched "The King" on Netflix, about Henry (Hal) V. They had his father Henry IV, featured as a sickly scrooge of a man. (Read up, the later part of his Regime, he was sickly.) Seemed to be a good flick, by the way!
...Rats, I don't do Netflix, or much of anything that costs money. With any luck, someday it'll make it to Kanopy (before the local public library ditches free membership) or YouTube. ...Meanwhile, though, Kenneth Branaugh's adaptation of Henry V got better reviews from me than it did from ...well, film critics. --In reference to whom, I'll never forget seeing the dvd of some newer Shakespeare adaptation, with the line on the cover that said something vaguely along the lines of, "Shakespeare was Never this compelling!" Thank you, that was enough to put me off watching the (expletive of your choice) movie.
Wish I could recommend some books. But under the prevailing, lamented circumstances, that would be dumb on its face. Betting (as in, money I don't have) that you have access to stuff I wouldn't have the wit or imagination to think of.
