When I won this lot from Savoca, I knew that there was a stray LRB hiding in the left of the picture What I was not expecting was it to be Flavius Victor, 384 or 387? - August 388 Son of Magnus Maximus AE4 DN FL VICTOR PF AVG SPES ROMANORVM / SMAQ, campgate with two towers Aquileia mint Flavius Victor was nothing more than a blip on the radar of history - Magnus Maximus, after deposing Gratian and receiving recognition from Theodosius in the East, elevated his young son to the purple at an uncertain date, as early as 383 or as late as 387. When Maximus decided to march on Valentinian II, he left his son behind in Trier as a symbol of his authority. Maximus was defeated by the forces of Theodosius and executed, and Flavius Victor was swiftly put to death. All coins of Flavius Victor are scarce to rare. Interestingly, this makes the second coin of this ephemeral emperor; I won this in a lot of LRBs on ebay back in 2017 Let's see those coins of Flavius Victor or any unexpectedly cool lot finds!
Very nice find, @Finn235 ! Congrats. Here is mine (only have one) Flavius Victor: Roman Emperor: 384-388 A.D. Bronze AE4 (14mm,1.83 grams) Aquileia: 384-388 A.D. Pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right. Camp gate with two turrets; star above, SMAQS Reference:. RIC IX 55b.2; LRBC 1104. Ex: Sergey Nechayev
Can't get better than that! My best recent find in a junk lot was this Leo I nummus in honestly pretty decent shape, considering. RIC X 701
(Bronze) AE IV Rome mint, A.D. 387-388 Obv: D N FL VIC-TOR P F AVG Rev: SPES RO-MA-NORVM - Campgate with star between two turrets [RB?] in exergue RIC 59 13mm, 0.9g.
Wow great find! I don't know that I would call the rest of the lot junk either looks like some interesting coins. John
Thanks all and nice examples! @Theodosius, I use the term "junk lot" for any group lot that cost less than $5 per coin. I won three lots of Byzantine coins in that auction at an average of about $3.50/coin. Mostly those crazy 7th century Heraclius / Constans II dynastic issues struck on chopped up older coins and bits of junk yard slag - very fun to sift through!
Coins really hit a low point there for a while, didn't they? It is fun and educational to go through lots like that and figure out what they are.
