There seems to be a question of the metal content for the new 2009 Lincoln US Mint 2 roll set. I am aware of the 95% copper issue for the Mint sets (satin finish) and proof sets but are the new roll sets normal business strike copper plated zinc or are they 95% copper? Thanks
the roll set set is standard metal content. http://mintnewsblog.blogspot.com/2009/02/2009-lincoln-cent-coin-images-and.html http://www.bucketofcoins.com/?tag=2009-lincoln-penny
Wonder what effect the economy will have on the numbers minted. Its effected demand so will that translate to low numbers minted? I have my opinion whats yours?
Yes they might be low, but low is a relative term. Something like 600 million per design instead of a billion of each one. And I think 600 million would still be plenty to go around.
600 million cents may sound like a lot, but the way i see it, cents don't cost very much to accumulate so if people hoard $100 worth of lincolns it would only take 60,000 people to own the entire population of the design (60,000 x 10,000 = 600,000,000.) instead of buying a 1 oz. gold eagle you could buy about 100,000 cents. if 6,000 people did that they could own the entire population of the design. so, how many people are planning to hoard the cents? i was planning on owning several boxes of each design if i can ever get my hands on them. they won't cost much if i can get them at face value. i think there's some satisfaction in being able to say that you own 10,000 of any collectible item.
According to info in Harry's links, the D mint type 1 is 340 million and the P mint type 1 is 190 million produced in Jan and Feb. Probably won't go up in march either since the penny line has been shut down in Philly for nearly 2 weeks.
340 + 190 = 530 million only take another 70 million to reach my 600 figure. And they have March and April to get there. Besides I'm not trying to be exact, just showing that even these "low" mintage will probably be plenty to supply collectors for a LONG time to come. Especially since so many collectors say they are planning to buy and hoard several rolls either from the Mint or the banks. Sure there won't be enough MS-69 or 70's to satify demand, but just as general uncs there will be PLENTY.
I'll get around to getting them some day, but I need not hurry as they'll never be rare, nor will they ever be expensive.
