I pulled this Lincoln form a circulated roll this week. The details are pretty sharp except for the date. I wonder if it was struck through grease, a filled die, or wear post mintage? Please let me know your opinion. Is it worth keeping?
It's possible it could have been struck through grease, but it almost looks to me as if the date has been ground off deliberately.
It looks ground to me, but keep it b/c it looks cool. Thats my opinion anyway. For a penny from a circ roll, if you have any inclination to keep it, do. It only cost u a penny. Ryan
If you look at what's left of the '9' you can see doubling. I'm guessing its deteriorated die doubling, and someone got a bit carried away with polishing the die and then left some grease on the die for full effect
Are those parallel marks that look like grinding incuse or raised? If they are raised, lawdogct may be on the right track, but if they are incuse, we're back to a grinder.
I honestly am havinbg a hard time telling. I can definaely make out the doubling Lawdogct mentions, both on the first 9 and the immediately right if the 1 (by the way its a 1996, which I can make out if viewed at the right angle) but under magnification it doesn't look scratched (incused) to me. What do I have?
