Im just wondering if anyone has had any luck with searching for coins using a metal detector? Ive heard that almost 99 percent of the time peope find jewelry which is cool too but ive heard that looking around old foundations is a hot spot for old coins. Living in pennsylvania there is a lot of old forgotten foundations so im hoping others have had luck.
I have a garrett ace 250 , never found anything of value .... well I say anything : I did find a 70's Canadian Quarter one time on the beach
Ah yeah ive tried beaches before too but have not had much luck.... i really wanna try old forgotten foundations i think there might be something interesting hanging around those places.
I've been detecting since 1989. I have found a lot of nice silver coins, Indian Head cents, large cents, two cent pieces, etc. (plus jewelry naturally). Sure old houses are great, but so are old schools.
ya, I'd imagine old schools would be loaded. If I had a metal detector, I would be at my school every weekend. My school was built in 1901 and hasn't been renovated since. All those careless teenagers, just throwin their change away. I wonder if a lot were as careless as they are now. In the lunch line, I see the kids just toss their change on the ground! I don't get it
I have a garrett ace 250. I have had it 1 year and get out every so often. I have found a silver rosie, a mercury dime, 9 wheat pennies and tons of newwer coins. Its fun if you can find good (legal) locations to hunt.
I love the idea of metal detecting, bought one for a couple hundred dollars on a whim and have tried using it several times, but I'm terrible at using it. It beeps, I dig, I find nothing.
I've metal detected a fair amount and found some great stuff. It even kick-started my coin collecting obsession. I've found coins dating back to the late 1800's, foreign coins, gold rings (see my avatar- found last October), old toys and some cool relics. It's like any hobby. You have to be dedicated and do your research to get results. Old foundations are a great location for lost coins. Sometimes, caches are found that were buried nearby or hidden in the walls. I love metal detecting and would do it everyday if I could.
yeah i think im going to hit up an old abandoned mental hospital called pennhurst, im thinking i might find a few cool things there.
I remember reading about a guy who was doing construction (or demolishing, I can't remember) an old mental hospital and found a St. gaudens double eagle! Not to get your hopes up or anything . . . . lol
Well for the most part change today isn't worth anything. On the other hand back in 1901 when that school was built, even a small amount of change had a LOT of purchasing power. So I guarantee you they were more careful with their change back then. If you search that school you will most likely find that the bulk of the material will be post 1950 and in fact probably post 1965.
