The Second 5 in the date is double. The Eye and the mouth look double also but very light. What really is this? Double Strike? Double Die? Re-punched Date? Thank for your help.
Here is what you have; http://lincolncentresource.com/FAQ/Poormansdoubleddie.html. Is is called a "Poor Man's Double Die" and it is very common.
Hi, Keep in mind that it is nothing more than die deterioration doubling with a cute name. These were hyped as something to throw into the opening in a coin folder where a real 1955 DDO should have been put. These are as common as sand at Jone's Beach. Thanks, Bill
It is a positive message. It tells the truth and saves a future collector from possibly getting the idea that these could be valuable. I know that you were not saying that the coin was valuable in your post but I've known of people that saved thousands of these circulated examples thinking that they would be rich someday. At three cents a piece, they didn't retire on them. I just wanted to add the aspect of value to the thread. The positive aspect of my post is the reality provided to other collectors. I just look at it from a different perspective. Thanks, Bill
