So, I had an old holder nice 45P MS67 jefferson in my registry set at NGC, I had been bothered by some carbon spots on the back, I knew NGC did appearance reviews but not on nickels, then it dawned on me, its silver not nickel! Durrh :goofer:, so I sent it in for review. I got great email help from a customer rep showing me how to submit it and what to say. And did some good follow up with me without having to ask again. But When it was done all they told me was that it was coming back to me and they designated it as FS, I asked 5 or 6 steps and if it was the same coin or a replacement but no answer, well I finally got it in today and it is a new coin. It is the 67 and they have added the FS to it. but no 5 or 6 FS! So I guess they are using the old designation that FS is 6 steps? That seems odd to me, Also, they didn't say anything in the enclosure like, we replaced your coin or anything like that, just a packing slip. also, they are using the same cert#, which is fine with me, but it hasn't updated on the registry set, I guess that may just take time but thats like another 400 points or so, And I need to see if i bumped leigh off the top 10 yet! Anyway, good communication up front from them but not so good on telling me what they did with the coin, also, while I like the edge holders it doesnt match my other coins in the set, it also isnt that nice dull silver you get with the war nickels, it is a nice blue gold tone, but that again doesnt match my others which were white, I wish they would have found a coin closer to what my original one looked like. I guess since I am sending in a couple more to get reviewed for FS that I should get them all edge holder encased to match. I will post pics up later, but thats my experience so far.
Very nice!! How about some photos of the coin---and if you have photos of the coin you sent in so we can see the differance!! Speedy
Let me understand this. You sent in a 1945-P Jefferson Nickel MS67 for review because of some carbon spots. NGC under their guarantee policy sent you back a different 1945-P MS67 which is blue and gold toned and graded FS=6 Full Steps. Do you feel a little like you won the lottery? If there is a key date to the War Nickel Series, it is the 1945-P. In MS67 the population is 357/2 with a price of $170. In MS67 6FS, the population is 7/0 and the price is over $5,000. The bump in registry points from an MS67 to and MS67 FS is 721 points not 400, but either way, you still have a long way to go to catch me. Even with your lottery win, you are still 744 points short of passing me. Good luck though with your other submissions, I hope you take over 10th place, right behind me at #9. We definitely need to see some photos of this puppy. Seriously though, are you pulling our collective chains?
Heh he, I thought that would get you out, I always thought my original one was FS and thought about sending it in but never did, apparently they agreed it was FS and it wasn't designated, so they replaced it with another 45P that was FS, but that is what the holder says, "FS" not 5FS or 6FS, the only thing I can think of is that they used the designation it would have gotten originally which would be FS for 6 steps? And I would have to send it in for 6step designation? BUt that is just a guess and doesn't make sense to me, but the only other things I can think of are a printing mistake or they changed their FS designation again. here are the pics with the FS designation, you tell me? The pics really suck for the toning, it doesn't show the real light hazy blues in it. Of course my flourescent lights aren't good for that, too much yellow in it. Honestly it doesn't do much for me, but I bet it would flip your lid, hee hee. Oh, and I still haven't picked up my 43/2p yet so you better watch out!
ANd what the photo doesn't show is the area right in the middle of the reverse over the dome and steps is this real light irridescent blue, I haven't seen anythign like that before, but I don't study toning, and on the obverse the same blue is in front of will's face and it goes to a goldish darker tone going to the right and lower. I am really going to find a way to get good pics of that for you, I know you'll like it. Is that blue kind of rare or common? The color is actually fairly close to what looks like a reflection over the lower left window on the reverse.
I still don't understand. This coin has a population of under 10. Where the heck did NGC just pull out another 1945-P MS67 FS from. Does the coin they put in that holder really merit the MS67 grade and the 6FS? Furthermore, were you aware of how valuable your original coin was? And what happened to that original coin? IMO, NGC has a lot of explaining to do here. PS. I don't have my 1943/2-P yet either. Don't worry though, I won't accept anything less than an MS66 with color so it might take me a few years to complete my set. Maybe the current owner of 901862-014 will decide to sell his 1943/2-P NGC MS68* and I will pick up 3600 points.
Been trying for awhile this is going to be the best pic I can get of the toning, Ill need to get it under better lighting sometime, but this is close to showing the range in dark and light but not the hue or colors.
I was wondering the same thing about where they got this one, maybe they just had someone that didnt like the toning and they are going to conserve mine and send it to them? awfull big coincidence though, I really think this coin merits the grade, the steps you can almost count with the naked eye, its almost like a proof strike, in fact, I think the strike is slightly better than my old one. I thought my old one merited a better grade, but how often do we think our coins deserve a better grade? I have had that one for probably more than 10-12 years and didn't think about it much, in fact I just started to collect the highest grade war nickels I could find, I didn't even know about resgistry sets until I opened my account there. makes you wonder what they have in the vault waiting to be put on the market. So according to their slab you would say that means 6FS? SO why didn't they put 6FS?
Oh, and will they automatically update my registry set? since it has the same cert# there is nothing for me to add but it still says 67 not 67 FS
Does this look closer to you coin? All I did was set the background to white. Oh! And congratulations!
Thanks, yea thats closer, but the lighter areas look too silver here, they are more blue, like.......like old lady hair blue! Or close to the lighter blue areas in this smilie
Maybe those population reports aren't telll you everything. There are millions of 1945-Ps out there and not even a good portion of them are in slabs. Keep checking your change. Ruben
True to some degree but the pop report tells you a general likelyhood, just like before I knew how rare and valuable the 45p really was to get in 67 I looked for literally YEARS trying to find the one I had before, I just couldn't figure out why that one was so hard to find. Lots of 65s and some 66s, but not so many 67s. Plus I had looked through ALOT of raw coins looking for some that might hit. Yea it is definitely one to look for raw, I still look for them cause it can easlily turn a $20 coin into an $400 coin.
My guess is that your old coin will find it's way back into another slab. With NCS right around the corner NGC will have an easy time time cleaning it up and then "presto" another MS67 ... with possible FS designation.
OK, I tried my scanner, came the closest so far, it still seems a little darker than the coin is and I adjusted the levels a bit. I hope you are right and they will update this week! I wonder about my old coin too, I think they should call or email you before they replace a coin to see if you want it back or not.
Still waiting for the cert to update at NGC. What I want to see is how many they put in this grade slot. There are no 67FS (assuming FS is still going to mean 6 steps) and none higher, there is one 66 and 2 67 5FS. So I am wondering if they will put the pop at 1 or 2 since they have my other one. Oh and I decided this was a good enough occasion to celebrate st patty's and my new coin with my padron 1926 that has been aging away!
nice, NGC just responded to my question about the FS designation, they said they don't know if it was 5FS or 6FS and I need to send it back for designation as a machine error, as it sits they say it will not be included in the population reports or my registry set. How that can happen I have no clue.
