Forgive me for mispelling "Scandinavia" in this heading of this post This week's tour of 2nd Millennium Coins brings us to the coins of Scandinavian countries which were minted by them or other mints during the year 2000. Those countries and posessions are: Denmark, Faroe Islands, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. ASW, 9990 Fine) Commemorative of the Queen's 60th Birthday, was made. The design (obverse and reverse) is the same as the 20 kroner. Just look at the 20 Kroner image again and visualize a 38mm coin with the denomination being 200 Kroner instead of 20. FAROE ISLANDS: Denmark provides the coins for the Faroe Islands so the same coins already examined under DENMARK are the ones circulating there. FINLAND: In 2000 the lowest denomination coin minted by Finland is the Copper-nickel Alloy 50 Pennia which was previously struck in the years 1990 through '99. Guess what? The next Finnish coin is a 24.5mm Copper-aluminum-nickel Alloy Five Markkaa with a Lake Saimaa Seal on the obverse. The coin in the photo is dated 1994. The 2000 dated coin was struck as a business strike and in proof. http://worldcoingallery.com/countri...inland km73 5 Markkaa (1992-1998) Ringed Seal A 10 Markkaa bi-metallic (brass center in copper-nickel ring) coin was struck beginning in 1993. A Capercallie bird adorns the obverse. ASW) 100 Markkaa coins: No photos of any of the three are available, but here's a description of the three: Coin 1) 15,000 were struck for circulation. Coin 1) 3,000 proofs were minted. Coin 1) Commemorating the Jubilee Year 2000. Obverse has an artist's rendering of the Turku Cathedral Vault Ceiling. Reverse features a leaf. Coin 2) A mere 10,000 coins were struck for numismatists. Coin 2) Commemorates 450th Anniversary of Helsinki Cultural Festival. Obverse bears a symbolic column design while the reverse features a carved view of Helsinki. Coin 3) Honors Aleksis Kivi on the reverse, while "books on shelves" adorns the obverse. Coin 3) The Finnish Mint struck 10,000 coins for collectors in uncirculated and another 6,000 in proof. Remember me telling you "A strange thing happened?" 1999 was the year Euro Coinage began in Finland, so I'm introducing the first 2nd Millennium Euro Coins of Finland which were struck in the 2nd Millennium Year 2000. ICELAND Nickel-coated Steel Krona These Nickel-coated Steel coins were first struck in 1989 (5,000,000 of them) and again during the years '91 (5,180,000), '92 (5,000,000), '94 (5,000,000) '96 (5,000,000), '99 (10,000,000) and 2000 (a mere 10,000). The date on the coin in the photo is 1991. This composition and design was used in '96, '99 and 2000. Those are capelins on the reverse. It is composed of .9000 fine silver (.7720 oz. ASW). It is the Leif Erickson Commemorative Silver 1000 Kronur with the featured image of Leif on the reverse and the quartered design of an eagle, a dragon, a bull and a giant. NOTE: This coin was designed and minted by the United States Mint. http://worldcoingallery.com/countri...Iceland km37 1000 Kronur (2000) Leif Erickson Another coin was produced by Iceland in 2000 made of .9000 fine gold (.02503 oz. AGW. It is a 10,000 Kronur. It is a commemorative tribute to "1000 Years of Christianity." The obverse features Iceland's National Arms and the reverse bears an engraver's idea of an "old crosier top." I couldn't locate a photo. NORWAY: In 2000 Norway's lowest produced coin denomination is the Bronze 50 Ore This coin (composition, design and denomination) was first struck in 1996 with a mintage of 81,856,200 business strike coins. Business strikes and unknown amounts of proofs were produced for each of those years. The first of this type was minted in 1998 (47,701,00 for circulation and 10,000 proofs for collectors). Coin type 1 is composed of an alloy of Copper-zinc-nickel and was first struck in 1994. No proofs) as a tribute to the Millennium. AGW) with King Harald V on the obverse and the "Tree of life" with its roots prominently featured on the reverse. (No Photo). SWEDEN: Sweden's lowest denomination of coinage for 2000 is the Copper-nickel Krona of which there are two types. King Harald's head is smaller then type 1, the date is from 5:00 o'clock to 3:00 o'clock instead of split at 6:00 o'clock. The reverse has a crowned Monogram instead of the coat-of-arms.
