I try to get over to my local flea market several times a year where i've been able to find circulated condition Franklins and Walkers for 3-4$ a piece. About three years ago i noticed one vendor had three Barber halves on his table for which he was asking 30$. I offered 20$ and he took it,the dates are 1898,1899 and 1909 all s mint. the 1909s appears to be VF-XF with more than half of liberty readable on the headband. The 05 Redbook lists it at 75$ in VF so ,i was pretty gassed about the deal i'd made. The downside is i've returned to the flea market at least a dozen times since then looking for more bargains, but have come up empty. It remains one of my favorite pieces due largely to the fact that it cost me less than 7$ . I'll post a scan of it,hope it works as this is my first attempt to attach a jpeg.
Speedy i just pulled it out of the safe for closer inspection.I'm afraid the scan came out quite dark, the coin itself is actually several shades lighter than it appears in the picture. It does have some dirt spots in several locations and obviously saw a good bit of circulation. However the ware is not bad, the Y in liberty is worn down to a V but i don't see anything that looks like corrosion.
well, not coins, but some years back I went to a flea market and was looking thru the comics in a box this guy had. He ended up having the old uncanny xmen, like 8 issues right in a row, starting with the new members of the xmen I got them for 25Cents each and ended up getting $200 for them. another time I bought an old history book for 50cents and found an old ticket from the 60s for a football game that was intact and was offered $300 for it. I gave it to a dear friend tho, who was a big fan of one of the teams. He had it framed and put it in his ''war-room'' lots of great finds at flea markets sometimes
The one flea market in my area is ridiculous. The prices are so high there it makes me sick, even on some toys. Because they can get high prices on Ebay, they inflate the prices big time. I haven't been back in years.
Here in Asuncion we have a flea market every Sunday. There's a guy who have a box with many coins, he sell any coin for 1.000 Guaranies (about 0.16 USD). I found (and bought) many quarters (some silver) and even half dollars! My friend told me if I'm going to the states I should buy all the US coins from this guy, and I'll save money in the exchange!
yeah, I bought a bunch of world coins a while back that had way more than what I paid for them in Canadian dollars, quarters and such. If I had the inclination Id be willing to buy a bunch of the lots and see if I could actaully come out ahead since its just a short trip up the road to the Canadian border
Here's a 1961 Proof Lincoln cent I picked up at the flea market for $5 (already slabbed). It was especially cool since 1961 is my birth year.
I've never had any luck at a flea market, but I've done well buying various silver coins [mercury dimes, 1964 halves, and ASEs] below melt value at two antique shops. Also obtained one civil war token that is common but high grade. The trouble is I've cleaned out the good stuff and they rarely restock coins because it isn't their primary business.
We used to have one of the biggest flea markets in the country here. I got lucky a few times, though I was too young to really know what to look for.
Great find for those coins. I too love flea markets for coins. We have indoor and outdoor flea markets all year long here and even with snow on the ground there is always someone at the outdoor areas. Most are open Saturdays and Sundays and some even on Fridays. One of them has from 4 to 8 coin dealers there. Four are permanent coin dealers with permanent fixtures and if you get to know them, the prices go way down. They all used to be really cheap with the prices but since this coin boom lately, even they have all raised their prices. At the flea market the dealers used to use the Red Bood for prices but now have graduated into the grey sheet due to the later and higher prices. We also have a coin show a weekend around here but the prices there are just rediculous lately. AHH for the good old days.
Great find would love to be able to say that I have had as much luck as you LOL :thumb: I visited a street market in Brighton a while ago and came across a stall that had some box's of coins, each was individuly priced so I placed the coins I was interested in on the rims of each box (Bad Move) turned to my wife to ask for my glasses only to find the stall owner throwing the coins back into the box's exclaiming loudly that they were all differing prices and I was not to mix them up !! When I pointed out that I was going to buy them and just needed my glasses for a closer inspection she shook the box's saying that if I coudn't keep them seperate then how could she work out the price :headbang: At this point I left before I said something nasty De Orc :kewl:
De Orc, I haven't been able to figure out if selling coins makes people rude, or if rude people are just attracted to selling coins. It isn't much different over here, which is one reason why buying on the internet is popular.
Have to sayfor me this was a 1st I had intended to spend some £50 ($85+) with her instead bought some Ice Hockey/Baseball cards LOL De Orc :smile
Perhaps a little bit of both. It seems like the "greed factor" is a little more inherent in coin dealers than most other walks of life... at least from my experience anyway... For the most part, I put coin dealers and used car salesmen in the same classification (with lawyers one rung lower). My sincerest apologies to all the honest coin dealers, used car salesmen and lawyers on this forum...
rude coin dealers I remember one time as a kid, I walked into one of my local coin stores hoping to inquire about buying a bag of wheat pennies. Before I could even say anything, the owner shoed me away and said grumpilly, "Hey kid, I'm busy now; why don't you come back some other time." What a jerk. How can a dealer expect to stay in business if he can't even be courteous to his customers.
That is so sad, I use to help run a film &TV memrobilia store and I tried to treat everyone with respect as that is how I expect to be treated myself. We use to get kids coming in to buy mainly Star Wars toys, Mags etc but then they would see the rest of the goodies we had and we would spend ages telling them about 'James Bond', 'Green Lantern', etc it was fun for them and us De Orc :thumb:
