Not long. It was one of the oldest coins that I have. It a Far-Austria coin. (Then occupied by Germany) The date caught my attention. I always marvel at whose hands may have touched this coin through the years.
I happen to have been the beneficiary of a coin album which began with an uncle on my fathers side. The album passed to my father, then my mother, when she passed my brother acquired it and now it is in my hands. None of the coins are particularly exceptional in their grade but many of them are very special. There are 8 Colonials from the late 1780's,a number of early 1800 Half Cents and some later large cents. The shame of the majority of these coins is that they are so dark and/or worn that they are very difficult to photograph - with my lame equipment. I'll go ahead and post a few.... My wife's dad was a collector as well, that's where I caught the bug.... The bug continues to roam through my family tree. I'll digitally capture more of my "hand me downs" as time allows.
A sovereign was quite a bit of dosh back in the day, in fact more than a day's pay for the great majority of the population. You have to appreciate that he really must have sacrificed to save that much.
I posted these on another thread, but I guess they qualify as a "family heirloom" since they were left to my wife by her great uncle. I didn't even know she had them until this past Saturday, when she pulled out an old suitcase containing old books, jewelry, collectible tins, and this jar of coins. Nothing special, all common dates and heavily worn... but still fun to look through.
This was given to my dad by his grandpa when he was a kid. It's the only one that is left, my dad sold the other ones he had when times were rough for him and my mom before I was born. He gave it to me 5-6 years back for Christmas. Nothing special but it is one I will never sell. This one was given to me by my grandma a while back with a bunch of Mercs and silver rosevelts and few silver washington quarters. She also gave me a bunch of currency that was her brothers I believe. I don't have any pics of the currency or dimes though. Again one that isn't anything special, but I will never sell it.
