Do people still carry pocket pieces? I sometimes read about collectors years ago carrying pocket pieces, or 'lucky coins' in their pockets for years, and every once in a while seeing an auction for a AG or G example of a coin that is described as being a pocket piece. I imagine if people do still carry them they would probably use common date lower grade coins of little monetary value. I used to keep a 1899-O Morgan dollar in my pocket when I was younger just to take out and show people and to play around with. It was in AG when a relative gave it to me so I wasn't doing it much harm. Anyway, has anyone here ever carried a pocket piece, and if so what was it?
I've pretty much always carried a pocket piece. I often end up giving the coin away to someone who has expressed interest or who just "needs" a gift. I have a box of pocket pieces and I switch off every once in a while. I have a few Morgans, a Peace dollar, some halfs - Kennedy, Franklin, Walker, a few Canadian Large Cents, a Churchill Crown, a few rcc medals, a Canadian dollar - canoe type, toonie, loonie, gold plated Ike & JFK. Right now I'm using a Maria Theresa.
i used to carry a 2 zloty coin in 5th grade until i lossed it. That was a really lucky coin for me. Pic- http://www.nbp.pl/
Art, after reading your reply I pulled out my junk silver cigar box and found my old 1899-O Morgan. It is now back in my pocket where it belongs. I forgot to mention that about a year ago I used to carry a very worn dateless Standing Liberty Quarter in my pocket. Every once in a while a non-collecting type would ask me something along the lines of, "Wow, I haven't seen that state-quarter yet, what state is it from?....and what the heck happened to it?" I would then use the opportunity to try to get them interested in coin collecting.
Everytime I hear '''pocket piece'' a stainless 357 snubby comes to mind Guess Im still not a ''coin collector'' yet
My son uses a bi-metal Canadian coin as a ball marker for golf because he says it looks cool. Someone like Tiger Woods probably should use a small gold coin. I used to carry a lucky penny on my belt when playing baseball in little league.
