Cmon folks...any reports? I heard from Rick Snow today, he said he had a great show and that coins were HOT !!! He also told me that Charmy the Penny Lady had a great show as well. Lets hear from some of you who attended
To The Top I am hoping some of our members are getting home and settling in with a great report to follow. What I have heard: Gold is HOT Type is iffy Lincolns are slow Early copper is holding it's own Buffalo and Merc dimes are slowing It's GOLD GOLD GOLD folks, you can go to Legend and read Lauras report, she's usually dead on , but in the high end market that does not affect us common folk. I want to read from the collectors, not the 6 figure gang. Lets hear it ! Legend report: http://www.legendcoin.com/cgi-bin/inventory/cms2.pl?page=market_report
Do we have a 6 figure gang? I am not even in 3 figure gang. I like that Merc's are slowing as I wouldn't mind having a set. Might make it easier to get the lower mintage coins. Ice
I went to the show today. Unfortunately, with school I didn't have any spending money. I went to drool and look at what was available. I saw coins today that were among the finest I have ever seen. I particularly enjoyed the BEP display with the $100,000 gold certificates and the collectors display with 2 1913 Liberty Head Nickels. I had a fun time even though I didn't come away with anything.
I was at the ANA show all Friday and an hour or so today. I couldn't comment on lincolns as I wasn't looking for them, but key barber dimes were just not there. A few dealers said they were being cleaned out of all their barbers. I did manage to score a few varities of common barber dates, one was in a slab and is an unlisted RPM. And a couple of IHC varieties, a hard times token, some quarters, and a bunch of Egyptian ottoman qirshes from the only dealer who carried world coins. The show was very heavy on US coins. There were a ton of exhibits, including the two of the 1913 Lib nickels and an 1804 dollar. Overall there were more dealers than I thought there would be, Friday the place was mobbed with buyers. I did the rounds and saw Rick Snow and The Penny Lady amongst others.
They are not. I think the Legend report was about those 5-10K + coins, AND, the registry fever coins. They have been driven up soooo much in the last year the peak is due. This months greysheet actually has a cpl + signs....common date high grade pre-34 circs are selling like hotcakes, and the nicer XF/AU collector grades are hard to keep in stock. The collectors are out there, but the investors are playing with gold now I think. Glad to hear you scored a few Brad, glad you and CamaroDMD both got to see the pair of 1913 Lib's as well.
To busy to go to coin shows all over the world. We have 3 or more a month here now. I try to go to at least 2 now. Used to go to 3 and sometimes 4 a month and all within about 15 miles. Some are 1 day, 2 days and occationaly 3 for the really big ones. Last Sunday was just another great coin show here.
I went to ANA on Friday after attending a great 2 day advance morgan class taught by Ash Harrison. Friday seem very busy and report on another forum said it was really packed that day. There seemed to be lots of business being tranacted. Soome tables were impossible to get to at times while others were empty. There were some great exibits and the show seemed very well but together. I purchased a few Morgans and a nice vam 2a 1882 CC in a GSA holder at no premium and was pleased with my pruchases. The dealers that I know were doing well but I left Friday and don't know how they did for the whole show. The Penny Lady seemed to be keeping busy and hopefully she will let us know how she did when she gets a chance. Overall it was a great experience.
Hey Folks! I'm just getting back on my feet after attending back to back shows. I went to Portland early to attend the pre-show, which was tauted as having 160 dealers, but it only had about 35! I did buy a couple Indian cents including a very nice 1909-s NGC MS62 BN and a few others, but the pre-show wasn't worth it - we were quite disappointed, so we headed to the Indian Casino instead, where I won a few bucks! Thank goodness I was staying with a friend and didn't have to pay hotel expenses for the extra nights! I set up at the ANA show on Thursday and wasn't too sure how successful this show was going to be since the "talk" was that Portland was too far out of the way and it wouldn't be a good show in this economy. However, on Friday, I was pleasantly surprised - I couldn't believe how many people steadily poured in. My table was on the last row on the right and directly across from the BEP, which ended up drawing in a lot of people. I had steady and strong business all afternoon. Also, I should add that I signed up to participate in the kids' treasure hunt/trivia game and was swarmed all day with kids searching for their next clue, so that kept me busy as well! There was a strong selection of all kinds of coins out there, and I found some nice copper purchases (a gorgeous 1866 NGC MS65 RB) and I even bought a beautiful 1894/94 PCGS MS64 (pop 3/0) from Rick Snow for my own collection! I love this new coin! (see photo). But I digress.... back to the show stats. Saturday was even busier! My two helpers got so enthralled with hunting for coins of their own that they forgot to help me at my table - and boy did I need help! When they finally returned all excited with their new purchases, they quickly saw that I was swamped with people and jumped in to help me. So with the kids and the steady customers, and some nice coin purchases, it was a very busy and successful show for me. I had my regular local show on Sunday, so I had to fly home Saturday evening (I had my Portland friend cover my table with some of his own Indian cents he was selling), which meant I had to leave around 3:00 pm. When I left, there were still people in line to attend the show! (I don't usually leave a show that early, especially an ANA show, and really hated leaving this show since it was such a great show.) I have to say that the ANA sure knows how to advertise and publish their shows to scouts and other kids' organizations, that's for sure. These kids are our future, so even though it can be time consuming and sometimes distracting to help with kids activities at these shows, it is very worth the effort. I talked to my Portland friend this morning and he said that Sunday was pretty slow, which is pretty typical. But I think low to mid-range collectible coins are still strong, and that higher end coins are tougher to sell right now. My friend said he talked to a few other dealers on Sunday (Angel Dees for one) who said they had a terrible show. I think this is probably due to their only having higher end coins to sell. So the type of inventory you have really makes a difference on how well you do, especially in these times. Any way, I had a great show, a fun time, good food, and the weather was even pretty nice most of the time! By the way, someone on the PCGS board has posted several photos taken at the show in case anyone is interested in seeing what the show was like.
I went on Saturday; it was the first ANA show that I have been to. I had a great time and really appreciated seeing the Liberty nickels. Most of the dealers I spoke with said it was busier than they expected, which I take as a good sign. I bought three gold pieces; I found my 1915 panpac $2.5 gold dollar that I have been looking for the last past year. It appeared that a lot of money and gold were exchanging hands. I hope others enjoyed it. Kind of nice to go to one place and get to see a bunch of coins...
Glad to hear you had a busy weekend Charmy, and did well Maybe thats why Andy was slow.....he does not sell the lower end collector coins, just the super " pops " that are soft according to Laura. You need to step up to the ATM when you approach Angel Dees table. How did the poker game go, or did you guys do blackjack instead?
Though I heard that A.D. was grumbling about the show, I know that Rick did really well - he even has a nice group of AU Indian cents for sale. He seems to always have a pretty good show, I know I helped him out myself a bit! He always has some neat varieties that are hard to find, as well as beautiful key dates that everyone needs. And no, we didn't play regular poker at the casino, we played black jack, 3-card poker, let it ride, etc. - we had a lot of fun and even won some money! We did get together with Rick and one of his friends after the show for dinner, then we hung out at my friend's house for wine and more coin talk! All in all, it was a really fun and successful trip.
