I see that a Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) coins has been proposed in the Senate and the House for 2013. Thats all well and good. And because he was born near where I live, and spent alot of the first half of his life not too much farther away, this is a commem I'd be interested in. Seeing as how he was from Missouri and I've read a few of his books too. But why 2013? He was born in 1835 and died in 1910, so its no the anniversary of his birth or death. Anyone know, why 2013? Maybe the anniversary of the publishing of one of his famous books???
The coin is proposed to be minted in 2010, not 2013. 2010 is both the 175th anniversary of Clemens' birth and the 100th anniversary of his death. H.R. 7152: Mark Twain Commemorative Coin Act
Well, they're stuck with all those weird national thingie quarters and JFK fans won't let him off the half dollar, so I guess this is what's left. Maybe the next revision of the paper dollar can have Clemmons on the front or something. There were some patterns printed a dozen years ago and they were really cool.
D'oh! The Mint is missing a big opportunity. Why not a Simpsons commemorative set? Think of the unusual design for the Marge Simpson coin. And the Maggie Simpson coin could make sucking sounds when squeezed. The Moe coin could ONLY be good in bars. And the Barney coin ... well we won't go there. And the Edna coin ... well we won't go there either. Etc.
If you can find anything the senate or house does that's logical, please let me know! I just watch the news and stop trying to figure anything out these days.

Hmmmm, the simpsons. The possabilities would be endless. :thumb: I'd like to see Mr Burns on the new 1 dollar coin.
Twain Trivia ..........Born in Halley's comet year............1835 Died in a Halley's comet year.............1910[/QUOTE] Yeah, I know that. I was at the museum where he was born, recently. Thats why I was wondering why they would meant it in 2013. But if Hobo is correct, and Numismatic News made a typo, then that makes much more sense, that it will be minted in 2010.
Its not the mint... blame congress If you do any reading on the early commemoratives you will be shocked at how crazy some of them where... and be glad they only put out two a year. in the 30's it was bedlam, with some years having more commems being made than any one could keep up with. Some of them where out and out money grabs, and where not really commemorating anything! Check out the cincinnati music center commemorative... sorry cincinnati, but no one EVER considered you a music center
go here boys. the 2 coins for 2010 have already been decided unless the mint wants to break the rule of 2  http://www.usmint.gov/pressroom/index.cfm?action=legislation cheers
