Scored a really nice lot of IHP's for a super good price. All full LIBERTY, many w/ 4 full diamonds. Also found a couple of decent RPD's. I think the prize of the lot though is an 1887 DDO (FS-101). Obviously Longacre doubling is common on IHP's from this period but I believe this one is clearly a true DDO listed in the CPG. I'm not an expert so looking for any additional comments. I believe the coin is in the VF range, but it has some crud on the surface and could use a cleaning. However as I think the variety is worth quite a bit more than the $1 I paid for it I don't want to mess with cleaning until I fully understand what I have. Any thoughts or comments are appreciated. Thanks for looking.
Thanks. PCGS auction records shows VFish slabbed examples selling for ~$250. Even at half that it’s a huge win. any thoughts on cleaning? I assume a standard hot water soak followed by acetone soak shouldn’t do any harm.
Distilled water soak is all I would do to that one. I believe that an acetone soak will not remove anything that will make the coin look better. It is most likely to turn some of it white, and you do not want that.
Uh-oh.... Well, I'm not a procrastinator. Will take out of the acetone this morning and put it in some distilled water.
